Employer changing bonus period, interpretation required

    Hi,
    luckily I'm entitled to an annual bonus, this year they have changed the bonus period and I'm wondering if there's any outstanding entitlement based on the change.

    Here's the change:
    2016 Annual Bonus: "Dec - 2015 - Nov 2016" Paid out Dec 2016
    2017 Annual Bonus: "Jan - 2017 - Dec 2017" Paid out Jan 2018

    So basically the month of December 2016 is not part of the 2016 or 2017 bonus period. Should there be a pro rata bonus entitlement for December 2016?

    I think the method of calculation would be important. If bar staff were entitled to share 1% of the monthly takings in a bar or restaurant, they would have a genuine right to be upset if the busiest month of the year was excluded.

    If it's an arbitrary "Here's €500 for the end of year" it doesn't really matter.

    Note that there may also be tax issues - the bonus would be paid in the next tax year. Given that more people have pay rises than pay cuts, then more tax than necessary would be paid. This might be behind the business's reasoning behind the change - put as much profit into the current year as possible.
