I just received a letter from Susi saying I that I received the grant in 12/13 when I shouldn’t have and that I owe them the overpayment of €3000+
Has anyone else had to deal with this?
At the time if I had known I wouldn’t have completed college as I couldn’t afford it.
I filled the form out correctly and it was an error on their behalf.
Do I have to pay this? It is now 5 years later

Did you get the grant and then drop out of college?

It what way were you over paid? Did you get the grant by mistake or did they give you to much?

Realistically, you do have to repay it and you would be liable to pay it. In saying that, as it was an error and 5 years ago, I would have it done in installments instead of forking over €3,000.

From researching online all overpayments from that year were written off? As susi made numerous over payments there first year.

I would contact Susi about it, you wouldn't want it to be an issue again in a few years.

All over payments were not written of.

SUSI were before PAC in 2015 (could be 2016) and tried to have the debts written off, but were informed by the committee that the money given to students under the student finance act (free fees) and student grant scheme (every year) cannot be written off. It is public money and must be recouped like over payments similar to other state bodies.

For example, social welfare must recoup over payments to recipients as this is also an assistance payment.
