Can a GP be the first point of contact for hair loss?

Just wondering about the above? I am 23 years old and I have thinning hair for the past 2 years... Should I go to a hair specialist first or can I just go to a doctor and get prescribed something?

Do you actually have a bald patch or receding hairline? If the answer is yes then you have male pattern baldness in common with about 40% of the adult male population. There is no cure or method to reverse this. If, on the other hand, you still have a full head of hair but it has become thin there may be an underlying medical reason. The simplest way to find out is to visit a G.P. and have a blood test carried out.

Yes there is. It's called finasteride. Some people chose not to take it due to potential (but unlikely) side effects, but it is a choice.

    Has anyone tried 6% Minoxidil?

So what exactly does it do?
