Tesla Megacharger ~1.6MW

This could go into the Tesla Semi Truck thread but I think this deserves its own thread.

    https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-semi-megacharger-charging-port-close-up-look/

In all the hype about the Truck and the new Roadster there hasn't been much discussion about Musk's other announcement of a new Megacharging network that will charge at a rate of 400 (truck) miles (643km) in 30 minutes. Speculation online is suggesting that to achieve this, the rate of charge would have to be ~1.6MW (1600KW). I'm sure I am not alone here in thinking this is simply incredible but It does lend credence to Musk's tweet a while back claiming that Porsche's 350KW chargers were merely a child's toy.

I wonder does it offer a glimpse into the future where we will charge our cars once a week at a megacharger for a few minutes much the same way we refuel at petrol pumps today? I realise it's not physically possible today but that kind of charging rate would charge current EVs in single digit minutes.

Charging at 1600kW is so far beyond the current projected charging possibility it's hard to comprehend.

I'd suggest that if anyone was to implement it (albeit 18 months late) it will be tesla.

Unless the batteries become lighter, I would think, at present, there is a point where the weight is a limiting factor. Having a battery in a car, in present mode, that would last most drivers a week, would be, in excess of 100Kwh IWT.

I thought the 350Kw charger would do the present standard car in about 9 min?
I think about 60Kwh will be the sweet spot for most drivers, esp if it can charge in about 12 mins.

Great for trucks though. Think it will be very hard to manage the Grid side and only at 110kv stations.

Take the roadster 2 with it’s 200W battery, I’m sure it wouldn’t be to hard to subdivide it so it could charge 4 50W batteries simultaneously so you effectively reduce the charge power by 4 but still get the benefit
