Medtech R&D engineers – help/advice wanted

I’d really appreciate some help and advice from anyone working in R&D in the medtech sector out west.

In short, I'm an electrical engineer who would love (or at least thinks they would love!) to move to this sector but the reality is that I only have an outsider’s view of what goes on in the relevant companies. I also don’t personally know anyone working in the sector which doesn’t help things. While I would be quietly confident that my general skills and experience would be of value to an R&D department, all the relevant jobs I see advertised seem to be more aimed towards mechanical engineers. And while there are some more general PM jobs that I’d be a good fit for in ways, my key interest would ultimately be in the research side of things, closer to the action! However, with the limited information I have to go on, I’m concerned that the majority of the design work is mechanical in nature. And even if I were to consider the PM side of things, I have zero experience in the medtech sector which would probably rule it out anyway as a starting job.

So… I’d really appreciate it if someone who works in this area could offer a better insight on things (e.g. the typical makeup of an R&D team in terms of disciplines/background) and, as rudimentary as it sounds, an outline of a typical day in the job.
