I don't think I could live with the stress of somebody getting a fingerprint on it.

    That's just beautiful.

Do you know is there any connection to the old Singer car brand that was part of the Rootes Group?

None. It (Singer Vehicle Design) was actually set up by Rob Dickinson brother of Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame. The company was named after Porsche Racing Engineer Norbert Singer and Rob's previous profession as a singer.

    Thanks for that.
I kind of hoped that one of the old car names was being revived but never mind.

Nice but it's trying a little too hard. I'd still prefer a bog standard red 959.

Not everyone can appreciate a car like that I suppose, everyone who likes cars should try to own a 911 at some point.

During my twenties & thirties, the 911 was my ultimate dream should the numbers align. I can't think of a more iconic shape in the motoring world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,863 ✭✭✭✭crosstownk

From the outside it's nothing short of absolute perfection. It's stunning.

The interior, while also striking, wouldn't be as perfect - at least for me. The dash is perfect but the red and green is a bit - I dunno - too much. Maybe I'm getting old :(

So rather than give it 10 out of 10, I'll give it 9.9.

    Stunning car.

The fuel filler cap on the bonnet is a serious wart for me, once you see it you cant unsee it :(

In a few years tuners with money will be sticking Tesla motors into these.Im so conflicted at the thought of this.

I can hear that car just by looking at it.

That is one ugly car and the colour is just manky. I don't get all the love for it and I am a car fanatic.

I dunno FG. I appreciate the 911, think it a fantastic shape(the older ones), about the most reliable and practical "supercar" out there and it is most definitely an icon, but having driven a few down the years, including some rare enough models that are crazy expensive now(Carrera RS), I didn't like how they drove. I was very aware of a) the old story of the engine weight at the back and b) my lack of driving talent. The cars never felt as if they were on my side if you know what I mean? Floor hinged pedals don't suit me either. I could never get excited about them the way I might over some equivalent Italian cars that were often prettier(if quirky).

I do like this Singer Williams though. I'm a big fan of the stripped out thing. The idea of add power = go faster in a straight line, lose weight = go faster everywhere, do both = fun. I also like mad looking exteriors and interiors and cars that aren't an xBox on wheels with too many electronics getting in the way. So yeah, I like this car alright. If I had a Lotto win would I be looking at one? No, I'd get something like a Lancia Stratos. As far as filling a niche of cars trying to kill me to prove my lack of driving ability, I figure I may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb. :D

When I read the title I thought Singer Williams must be some new "talent" from X factor or something. But the car is nice.

    Mean looking for sure.

500bhp in one of those would require a lot of concentration and skill to avoid it swapping ends.

Chris Harris went around the 'factory' with the designer a few years ago on Drive, is worth a look. The dude is obsessed.

Well my statement was a sweeping generalization :) I have driven a few but it was only when I had one for a year that you really get an appreciation of the driving dynamics. Getting into one for a hours or a day doesnt do it justice. You have to drive differently, you power out of corners and slow way down on the way in, using the traction to drive out.

The brakes are funny, you would think them soft initially, but the pedal travel is very long, Porsche call it linear and they are very good once you get used to the pressure required.

Its the steering that really shines I think. And residual values are always strong. I drove one for a year and it didn't cost me a penny.

I personally dont think they are an everyday supercar. The practicality is there, but they are a fatiguing drive every day. The 991's are better, but they are a big car and turbo charged so some of the character is lost.

There is a reason the design has survived for 40 years and that every new generation is the state of the art in its category. Slagging them was fashionable at one point, but the Clarkson parrots are more quiet these days.

Oh I get that FG, but I found it, well, you put it well when you said fatiguing.
The brakes are funny, you would think them soft initially, but the pedal travel is very long, Porsche call it linear and they are very good once you get used to the pressure required.
    Yeah I like the brakes.
Its the steering that really shines I think.
Of the ones I've driven they varied quite a bit and to be fair were 60's, 70's and one 90's one so a bit of a spread in ages. I found them quite understeer prone oddly enough, yet most seem to worry about oversteer.
There is a reason the design has survived for 40 years and that every new generation is the state of the art in its category. Slagging them was fashionable at one point, but the Clarkson parrots are more quiet these days.
Oh it's a bloody good design alright. I think of the 911 like a Rolex Sub diving watch; historical, but still relevant, fit for purpose, well built, with small incremental improvements down the years, with loads of tiny nerdy differences that are loved by their respective aficionados of which there are many, great resale prices as you note and a byword for a certain level of status. And both have their many detractors and I suspect for similar reasons.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

It's a fair achievement for a 54 years old design to be still able to draw admiring glances from old men, young women and schoolboys in equal measure.

I just wonder how many of the detractors have actually driven one for more than an hour. usually in high performance motors those with the most to say about are car, have never actually driven one. Every time I hear a beetle comment about a 911 is make the assumption that is some 13 year old typing with one hand, and crying and masturbating in his mother wedding dress....but that just me. I have never met a car person worth their salt that does not appreciate the 911 even if they would not buy one themselves.
