Two problems with Mondeo!

Hi, I'm wondering if anyone here can help me before I send my car to a mechanic. Its a 06 ford Mondeo.

First problem has happened a few times in the past few weeks. The battery has been flat when I go to start it. No lights left on or anything and it doesn't happen every time I try to start the car. Is it just a battery replacement job?

Second issue is recently when the fuel light comes on and I go to fill up, the pump cuts out far before the tank should be full and you can hear a guzzling noise as if the petrol is going to start overflowing the tank but when I start the car the gauge only says its half full?

I haven't a clue how to manually check the fuel level.

    Can anyone give me advice?

Common enough that cold weather shows up knackered batteries - very simple job to change a battery. Of course, it is possible that some module is draining the battery but seems too coincidental to me!

Re fuel tank, there are 2 options - either your gauge is broken and 1/2 tank is full or the vent on the fuel tank is acting up and not letting you fill the tank - knock on effect is that it will be a pain to fill.

I'm going to replace the battery tomorrow and see does that solve the problem. It was dead yesterday evening leaving work and again this morning. I've been starting it and leaving it run for a bit every hour or so today and that seems to be keeping it starting. If its off for a long time the battery flattens.

The fuel gauge is definitely gone. The car tells you how many km you have left before refueling and this morning it was telling me 9km and the gauge was showing quarter of a tank, though obviously neither are right. I've no idea how to actually tell how much petrol I have in the car.

Is this possibly expensive to fix?
