    What car is it for?

Keep in mind a 175/50 tyre will have a smaller sidewall than a 185/50 tyre for example.

175/70 r14 is a fairly normal size. What is it? An old Corolla or something?

If going wider I would go with a 185/65 r14........very common tyre

Might make it a bit harder to steer.

Had 185/65 on the 405 for years though it should havr been 175/70. In the end I just got some 175/70s on oponeo when the old ones wore out.

I can get you 175/70/14 next day in various brands if you want, balanced and fitted if your near the pale.

Answering the initial question - you should be able to fit 185s with no problem whatsoever; If you go for 185/65, the sidewall will be about 2.5 mm smaller than the 175/70 - shouldn't be too much of an issue on the ride, as the wheels are 14s and not some of the stupidly oversized stuff most modern cars use.

You most likely know this, but remember the size and specification needs to be the same on each axle - e.g. two 175/70 R14Ts front, two 185/65 R14Vs rear (ideally, they should be the same all around, but I digress).

Are you looking for a specific brand or model of tyre?

The 175/70 14 size isn't as common as it used to be but most tyre places would have in stock and even if they didn't they would be able to offer you a range of options for next day delivery. Of course if you are looking for something very specific that may explain why you are having problems.

Might make it a bit harder to steer.

    No it won't

OP - There will be absolutely no difference when driving the car. Get them if they're more readily available than the 175's.

Took a look here and the difference is miniscule.

In any case, I always call my insurer to inform them I have different tyre size than was originally on the car, not to be caught in the "undisclosed car modification" clause. No-one ever had an issue with that.

My guess is an older Subaru or a Suzuki...

Impreza and older Legacy would have had that size too.
