Rise of connected cars

What do people there think about the increase in internet-connected cars?

This is something that worries me quite a bit - I don't like the idea of key functions being available remotely, or even the ability of someone to start messing with the (all digital) dash.

Banks spend millions each quarter to protect data, and they still get hacked on a regular basis.
If you look at the security issues coming from things like routers and smart devices, they are legion. It is rare when money is spent on consumer security.

And while I'm sure some Russian hacker group isn't out to target me, they will be out to target the model of car that I drive, and it might be just my luck that my car gets hit.

What do you (less paranoid!) people think?

What the worst that could happen¿

I can see cars being driven remotely in years and will be stolen to order via computer.

Driving along a motorway and then having all systems (inc power steering) suddenly fail.

Or something along the lines of :

if speed is > 50k and steering wheel is turned more than X degrees, turn off power steering and increase throttle.

Think about it - those are the level of controls that are allowed to be used remotely.

If your car is connected to the internet it's only a matter of time before someone hacks it.

Or in 10-15 years after the car is made the manufactuer will "stop supporting" the car, turning it into a worthless pile of scrap metal overnight despite being mechanically sound.

The allure of the planned obsolescence business model might be too great to prevent that from happening.

Maybe it's the government you should be worried about instead of Russian Hackers. :D

If it cost a bundle to update your satnav, how much do you think it will cost to update the car?
