Hi All, Just looking for some information. I'm currently a member in Waterford but i'll be moving to Dublin in January. I've researched it a bit and i'll be looking to join a club around swords. I'm interested in Corrstown GC but I've heard a rumor they might be introducing a joining fee in January? Any truth to this? The club wouldn't confirm or deny. I wont be in a position to join anywhere until Feb/March but I don't fancy paying a joining fee!! I might take the offer they have running at the minute if it meant i got in before the entry fee is introduced.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know about Corrstown and the introduction of an entrance fee but if you are interested in information about Balbriggan let me know. If you are in the Swords area it will only be out the road from you.

Also a much cheaper introductory offer on the table that what is advertised with Corrstown.

I am a member of Corrstown and have heard nothing of an entrance fee. I know that membership is pretty healthy but there is still introductory offers out there and rewards for members getting people in so I can't see there being an entrance fee.

I would not put you off Corrstown it is a great spot and good value for money. I am leaving after this year but not for anything negative about the place.

Balbriggan is nice and cheaper than Corrstown but the courses are not the same IMO. Corrstown is far better.

I have joined Castleknock on their flexible membership which is super value for anyone but a 2/3 games a week man.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Theres always Roganstown which provides access to both Roganstown and Swords Open.

    No temp greens or tees

    18 hole comps every weekend

As a member of Corrstown you are bound to have that opinion. Didn't see Corrstown ranked in the Top 100 though ;)

Was Balbriggan in one of those lists?! Wow I'd love to see the reasoning. Nothing at all wrong with it but very easy and boring for me.

Even in winter?? What's happens if there is a frost delay ? Does every member that wants to play at weekends get a game with the short daylight and 18 hole comps ??

This club is going out of its way not to close and not to have temp greens, I played it recently and the place should have been closed. This is not a good way to run a club and will damage its main asset in the long run but that’s there personal decision and still a nice track.

Corrstown have no plans to bring in joining fees this year but I think you are confusing Corrstown with St Margaret’s as they have said they would introduce a joining fee for 2018 but I reckon that will depend on how many of the current members leave and how many spaces they need to fill in the year ahead.

Personally, I think joining fees will be back within 2/3 years.

Sorry to see you go Eoghan and I know a lot of members enjoyed playing with you but I understand your mates are at Castleknock. There gain is or loss has I reckon we will have strong teams next year in the inter club as we have a lot of low handicappers playing great golf at the moment.

Roganstown would be my choice, play there every weekend thru the winter, the odd frost delay but never any problems getting on a time sheet.
For the fee you also get 5 day membership in swords open plus full access to the gym and leisure centre.
It drains really well closed maybe 3 days in the last 4 years for rain.
Other courses mentioned were closed 4 weeks in a row.

If you are not joining anywhere until February, get out and play as many of the courses as you can. You have 12 or 13 courses within 10/15mins of swords.

From the top I would go.
    Roganstown, Margaret's, balbriggan, beavers town.
    Corballis.
After that they are pretty must all the same tree lined shortish parkland.
    Corrstown Donabate Forrest Little, stillouge.
    Malahide, ballcarrick.

    Think most are over 1000.

    Hollywood Lakes is nice too.

As a new member of balbriggan I can vouch for what a smashing course it is, well worth the introductory offer they have on at the moment. I played corrstown in a society about 6 weeks ago and that is also a lovely course and has 3 nines which is good but I picked balbriggan because every person I asked said it was a way better course then anything for the price.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,385 ✭✭✭ThunderCat

I really think you need to play these courses that you have shortlisted. That will give you a better idea than any opinion on here as to which one is best for you as of course we are all different. And go into the clubhouse afterwards and get a feel for the place that way too. You also have to factor in the drive to each course aswell. 20 or 25 mins on paper sounds fine but it might be prohibitive to you if you only want to go and play a few holes after work or practice your chipping and putting which you are far more likely to do at a course that is closer to you. Better again if the course you choose is on your commute home from work. On a personal note I'd be opting for Corrstown but that's just me. Another course I really like in that area that flies way under the radar is Rush. But as I said, get out there and play them. Then you will know.

If you're lucky enough to be under 30 you can join the Portmarnock links for 1,300 a year

My brother is a member of St Margarets and I've played it a few times with him.  Great course, with decent facilities and lovely food.  My only challenge would be the timesheet and slows being blocked off for societies at the weekends.
I've played Castleknock quite a few times this year, and rate it very highly.  Always in great condition and a good mix of challenging holes.
I'm a member of Corrstown, and wouldnt swap it for anywhere else btw :)

My advice would be get out and play as many as possible and make your own decision.
Lots of factors to take account of.
    Playable during winter.
    Time sheet.
    Booking system.
    Practice facility
    Club house

I forget to ask, what age are you? Most clubs have underage deals and some have family membership offers.

A lot of these clubs have AGM’s in the next few weeks which could result in higher membership fees afterwards, but most clubs only increase subs by a very small amount.

I'm a member of Hollywood Lakes and would recommend it. Especially if you you are under 30 or belong to another sports club

Thanks for all the feedback! There really is too much choice up this way. Do any clubs have a deal for Black Friday? (Pushing my luck I know :D) Pretty sure I've made my mind but who can refuse a good deal!

I would suggest that the closeness to your home should also dictate where to become a member. Nice to be able to nip out for 9 every so often during the summer on the way home from work. Balbriggan has come on a lot over the years, wouldn't rate Roganstown as a club, I was a member there in 2010 and didn't go back. St. Margarets is good.

    What is Balbriggan's introductory offer?

I'm about to leave a North Dublin club for course related reasons and am looking. Living in Dublin 7 so am contemplating Lucan as it's very close.

They do however have a 5k joining fee but it's spread over 12 years.

Have been doing 25min drive to my current club so that doesn't bother me and I'm also considering moving to Skerries so Balbriggan might suit.

I'm also considering Margaret's however I'm put off by block booking of tees for societies and it not being a members club.

    I'm over 30 btw 🙄😀

I'd consider it too but afaik it's up around the 2k mark and they still have that stupid credits system in place? I don't like the idea that by September I might have to pay more money. When you pay once that should be the end of it. Also not a member's club.

Great location for me though. How much did you pay for your subs if you don't mind me asking?

Edit: had a look at Balbriggan offer there. Excellent value indeed, am following up.

Unlimited membership is 1800 in Castleknock. The credit based one is 1450 according to this:

€999 for Balbriggan, unless you are under 30 in which case it is cheaper. Balbriggan would be a superior course to Skerries if you are moving for course related issues and also more direct given the proximity to the M1.

If you need further information drop me a PM.

Cost €1450, it feels like a members club but then again i've never been a member of another golf course, i'm trying it for one year there anyway and if i feel i'm running out of credits and have to keep topping up i'll look elsewhere but so far so good.

Balbriggan is miles away, its great being able to jump in the car sat morning and be 15 mins away

Depends where you are travelling from and your proximity to the M1 really. A lot of Balbriggan members would travel out from the Northside.

The credit based system is the reason I joined to be honest!

I crunched the numbers on how much I play at my home course and it worked out a massive saving. The fact you can use the money in the Bar, Restaurant or Pro Shop is great. Now when I am looking out the window at rain and frost I know I am not losing any value by missing golf.

I think you would be surprised if you took a few mins to look at the numbers, I was always against credit based too. If you are playing 3 times a week then it's probably not for you.
