Hello. Can somebody recommend a car for my first car. 1 litre would suit best.

    Yaris

    /thread.
Might be needing to look at 2nd small car, so also interested in this thread and OP's question.

What's the thinking between Yaris and Corolla for these criteria?

Also are petrol Yaris cars (and Corolla) of this vintage (say up to 2008) easy to work on in terms of DIY maintenance? (and what are the best online forums?)

To contribute something: another car I've driven in this space was the Fiat Punto. Generally cheap to buy, cheap to insure (so long as vehicle age doesn't hobble you I guess). Tax is OK (1.2l rather than 1.0l, so there's a small penalty there). Surprisingly roomy and good carrying capacity.

Pretty easy to maintain as well if that's your thing (I've no special skills but replaced brake pads, brake disks, alternator belt, spark plugs, HT leads, air filter, bulbs, thermostat, also did oil changes and coolant change). None of those were due to break-downs, just replacing service parts over a few months as I'd no service history. Only thing that was "broken" was the stat, but that doesn't stop the car in the short run. One of the easiest timing belts to DIY, and fiatforum is very active and helpful (and punto forum was lively and responsive, the guys would nearly talk you through a job in realtime if you were stuck). Service parts are cheap, was easy to sell on afterwards (even though it was by then suffering with some corrosion in sills, look out for this if buying).

Might get another myself, however I hear a lot about Toyota reliability and engineering, so also interested in Japanese potentially...
