rough price? how long is a piece of string?

best advice would be to set a budget and start from there. Will she be picking her own or will you be? Check out a few different ring styles online and try to figure out what she might like, learn about the 4 Cs if buying a solitaire as these ultimately determine price of the ring.

She would be picking and I would be buying. I am just wary of going into a shop over there, buying a ring and then getting home to realise i have been stung somehow. So if I got recommendations of shops over there I would cut out any hassle and just go there.

My husband proposed in NYC and we got the ring there in Hanikens Jewellers. A lot of Irish people use them, I think they advertise in the Aer Lingus magazine! I was very happy with them and the ring is perfect. We also went to Tiffanys, but I couldn't justify spending more just for the name!:o

Jamesallen.com operate from New York. You can choose the exact diamond you want and talk to people online before you go.

James Allen is the best way to buy diamonds IMO.

In terms of quality, value, service & website, they are basically the Amazon of diamonds.

Pretty much all of their diamonds are GIA certified so 100% trustworthy.

It's as simple as; choose your diamond and setting on James Allen.

Buy it and ask them to deliver the ring to FedEx Hoboken to save the 9% NYC sales tax.

Collect the ring and surprise your gf with it over dinner/top of the rock/central park etc.

Another vote for Hanikens here, don't be put off by the "pound shop" environment, and just focus on what you want. I've had the lucky/unlucky experience of being engaged twice and needed to resell a ring I bought in Hanikens and got 40% of value in auction back here in Ireland which is around-about way of saying the prices are good, the norm is <20% so the prices are keen. I'm not supersitious so when I went back to NY the second time to get engaged I went back there again. Happy to answer any questions you have via PM, I know all the good spots to get engaged in NYC! Enjoy the experience :)
