What's the scam?

My uncle was at a roadside chipper during the week when a white,NI reg van pulled up,followed moments later by a second white van.
Two men approached my uncle and the other customers that were present.
They said that they had too many brand new generators and that anyone that wanted one could have one for free.
They took one from the back of one of the vans and opened the box, took it out and showed it to everyone.
My uncle said that the van was around half full with the same generators.
    No one took one.

Anyone hear of anything similar happening?

Stolen and looking to offload them because they read about a nearby checkpoint on Facebook.

Stolen and looking to offload them because they read about a nearby checkpoint on Facebook.

There was no panic on them and they had one in plain sight opened on the side of a very busy road(N25).
Surly they'd just dump them down some back road and not mingle with people who could identify them if later needed.

It's a diversionary tactic, the bloke in the chipper has just fed your uncle a burger made from dead crow and chips made from old tyres.

Men offering free machinery out of the back of white vans are renowned for their trustworthiness.

Probably cheap chinese to start with and possibly re-boxed returns not working properly.

You heard of men offering free machinery?
Have had plenty of the travelling community try to sell me stuff alright but never heard of anyone giving it for free.
These didn't seem like travellers either.

Tracker fitted so they can come rob it back when you're asleep as well as all your other possessions

Sounds odd. Probably no harm telling the Gardai about it if you haven't already. They were surely stolen.

Why would they? This is a thread about possible dodgy dealings

I see a problemo here , you said they didnt seem like travellers yet your uncle was the one who met them.
    Are you your uncle ?

Or did you try and give away the generators / Argos catalogues?

I reckon it was Daesh trying to surreptitiously create a few safe houses for their stash.

Here come the easily offended brigade.
It was mentioned because anytime I have been offered stuff from the back of a van it was by travellers but this wasn't them this time.

Business involving travellers is all most certainly a scam. But Gerry Adams might tell you differently.

You obviously haven't seen any of my other posts about our mobile brethren. I was trying (and failing) to be humorous

    I like this reason.
I did think tracker when my uncle told me but then thought why the need, you can just rob any house.
The jammer though, could be why.
If I ever come across them,I'll take one and ask my neighbour will they store it for me for a few weeks.
If their car doesn't get robbed,I'll take it back and if their car does get robbed, well then,I'll just see that as karma for leaving their dog alone all day constantly barking.:D
