10-D Laguna - Advice please

    Howdy,

I had a look at the below car today. Taking into account the advice on the 'buying a used car' sticky the car drives very well, and apart from the normal scratches and wear and tear there is no obvious problem on visual inspection and drive test. However, I'm a tad clueless in car purchase.

    The issues begins here:

    - Patchy service history. Main dealer history for first four services @ about 25k, 44k, 80+k and 114k. However nothing since the 114k in 2014.

NCT in July'17 showed a fail, with pass following rectification of rear brake drum issues.

No evidence of timing belt etc having been done.

Also, seems to have been there a while, and it looks like the NCT in July was put through by Spirit Motor Group.

One of the keycards doesn't work but dealer said it's probably a battery and he can sort. Also, he has given a price for a timing belt kit which he would have installed before sale.

It's a very nicely specced car, drives really well and comfortable. I'll need it for mainly motorway miles travelling with work but also picking and dropping kids etc at weekends.

Would I be mad to consider this with the patchy (or nearly non-existent) service history ?

If I was to consider it, what more should I be doing ?

Finally, as with all dealers, they offer a 12 month warranty at additional cost (Provider is Mapfre). Is that worth considering or would it be better to keep the cash for repairs ?

I appreciate there's only so much you can try to allow for a car this age and mileage - I just want to avoid the really stupid stuff ! Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Oh, and have an '07 Clio (3) to move on. About 128km on clock. Slightly scuffed around the corners (was driven by elderly parent) and only brought back to life after a year off the road. Passed NCT till Aug '18 no problem, but needs some work to front right shock (I'm told) and probably needs a timing belt kit also, also exhaust is noisy. Trade in value seems v limited €500-€1000 at most, but it starts on the button and is a good city runabout. I reckon prob best to get the issues fixed and look for say €2k for it privately ? Next cheapest on carzone is €2750....

Last 70,000km with no service history. I wouldn't risk it. The 1.5dci is a great engine but needs the right oil on time.

I’d guess first owner kept three years and kept main dealer history and second owner serviced it locally and didn’t get the book stamped - ie like the vast majority of cars. It’s hard to get fsh on 7/8 year old cars so really you have to buy on current condition

100%. And if it was "just a battery", they'd have replaced it and let it on with 2 functional keys. Mad money to replace, so just factor this into the purchase, or if you are intent, push for a price drop to facilitate this.

Most Renault keys can be easily repaired. We had one done a few years back with this crowd.
