    Hi all,

    The question.

I passed my category C licence last year and of course brought to NDLS my medical report form (501 if im right) and GP said that it is valid for 5 years and is valid for Group 2 vehicles which is rigid trucks, artics and buses.

Now i wish to do my artic lorry test and do i need to bring in another medical form or previous is good?

    Thanks

No you don't. Permit is for two years, so they will use the existing medical on file. However, if you pass the arctic, a new medical is required for group 2 as your full licence will be renewed when you go to add the category

Unless it's changed I never submitted a 2nd medical to get the other categories added to my licence. You do need to submit a medical to renew the licence.

Group two medicals before Jan 2013 were for 10 years, so that was possible. However the max term for group 2 is now 5 years. So most drivers would need a new medical after passing a group 2 vehicle test. Naturally all should be checking with NDLS first to see if it's needed in their individual case, as such medicals are not cheap.

That is exactly why i am asking this. Thsnks

If it takes you more than 5 years to pass the 2nd test then you will need it. But if you get the C in year 1, then pass CE in year 3 and D in year 4 you won't need another
    medical till you renew.

To get the permit, no medical needed. As you presented the group 2 medical when you passed the C.

When you pass the test, a new group 2 medical will be needed, as licence gets renewed for the full term on the day you apply to add it to your licence. NDLS Tel. 0761087880 or RSA Tel. 1890406040 will confirm that.

    :confused::confused:

Whenever I added a category to my licence, I was issued with a replacement licence valid for the original term with the additional categories added.

That has changed. Whether adding group 1 or group 2 categories to a full licence, the licence gets renewed for the full term. However, if you add a category to a permit, the original expiry date stays the same (so it's not renewed unless it's due for renewal anyway).

    Got a 10 year medical in 2012.

    Added category C then
    Category D in 2013
    Category CE in 2015

    All on the same medical.

Even though my medical doesn’t expire until 2022 I’ll get a new 5 year medical in 2020 as that is when C,D,CE expire.

Might as well get 5 years then instead of 2 years.

The last year of a 10 year medical report for group 2s was 2012. From 2013, it was 5 years max for grp 2 categories alongside 10 year categories for group 1. If you hadn't been adding categories after 2013 (ie if you had all your current categories in 2012) none of your categories would have expired until 2022. There is still confusion out there about medical reports for sure.

I added category D in 2013 and it was on course to expire next week.

Only when i added CE in 2015 did they change it to a fresh 5 year licence.

Some might say i lost 2 years, others will say i gained 3.

As you say, confusion still reigns.
