Is it possible to lodge a cheque by posting it to your bank with a covering letter?

I have done it by post but have a supply of lodgement dockets at home that I use.

Sadly, I don't have any lodgement dockets. Are they absolutely necessary?

I am abroad at the moment and someone has given me a Euro cheque so I need to lodge it.

Yeah I've done that before a couple of times, I just wrote my name, address phone number and bank account number on the back of the cheque, popped it in the post and it was logged no problem.
