Reared calves for the first time this year and I am curious to know what weight they are. I came across this chart and said I’d try it out. Does anyone know how accurate it is? I used a weigh tape for horses that has cm on it so the measurements are accurate

    http://www.bairnsley.com/Weight%20by%20Girth.htm

I made sure they had there heads up and standing correctly. Only have 6 but here are the results

    Hereford born 1/4/17 139cm 232kg
    Hereford born 28/3/17 149cm 280kg
    Hereford born 1/4/17 144cm 255kg
    BB born 12/4/17 143cm 250kg
    Fresian born 29/3/17 145cm 260kg
    Norwegian Red born 27/3/17 151cm 290kg

How accurate of a way is this to weigh cattle? If the weights are somewhat then I’m happy with how they have done. I can’t justify buying a scales. I’ll try post pics of them later

Dont mean to make little of your efforts but how can it be accurate like the girth of their chest wont take into account a bad or good back end

Why don't you bring one of them in a trailer to the local mill weighing scales?

I only did it as an experiment and was curious if anyone else does it. I might load up a couple tomorrow and bring them down to the local glanbia to see if it’s accurate.

If accurate, it might be helpful to others in the same situation as me

Will you post the results please
