Self employment and Social Welfare

I am wondering if anyone has been in my position. My partner is on Disability allowance, we live together and we have 3 children. I recently got a job, part time, earning approx 250 a week. I am self employed. When I informed Disability allowance section of the change to our circumstances they deducted 250 per week from my partners payment. Which means there is no financial incentive to keep this job. By the time I pay for transport I am actually losing money through working. I have appealed this decision as I feel it is discrimination against a self employed person. If I was an employee then I would be gaining financially through working. Can anybody shed some light on why Social Welfare would have this rule regarding self employment? I am hanging on with the job but it's looking like I'll have to let it go and start looking for work as an employee for it to make any sense for our family.

Thank you in advance for any input.
