I bought a new (used!) car last week and there is this strange contraption installed next to the gear lever which I have no idea what it is. Any ideas?

I cant see any way of mounting any phone on that yoke. Is it like you’ll have to get one of those gooseneck mouns for it? Also what is the box with the push switch on it?

They are extra 12V sockets. It's a mount for a dock for a phone.

That's what he's asking :D The other thing is a shot gun cartridge holder.

The box with the push switch is a cheapie but very effective phone mount. Most car accessory places sell them. The missing bit is a small metal disc shaped to fit the rounded bit of the 'box'. Has an adhesive backing, which you stick onto the back of your phone, or back of the phone case. Phone then sits VERY securely to the mount. The push button bit is where you press in order to release the phone, although I've had about 4 of these yokes over various cars/phones and have never needed to push the button to release the phone.

They're cheap, they're widely available and they are discrete for a phone mount. Only thing to be wary about is if the magnetic effect might interfere with your phone, but I've had no issues on that score...

Phone mount. You would stick a metal disc to the back of your phone and it would attach magnetically to the holder. Push the button at the side to raise the lever in the middle to release the phone

Now we know what it is can we ask the OP to put the pics in the Guess the Car thread? :-)

I'm thinking VAG but the upward curve on the centre console says no.

Gear selector is quite distinctive - maybe Toyota?

Gear pattern looks like a Toyota, Corrolla I think?

It's not a Corolla anyway. Can't put my finger on it. Thought it might have been a Mondeo with all that silver plastic but it's not. I reckon it's a Subaru Legacy. Obv the other way round!

    I'd say it's a 06Dxxxxx Legacy 2.5
    Edit: Blue with a towbar

Traded it in to Frank Keane June 2016 :D
Loved it - but not the tax.

    forgot to respond to this.
Yep, James, Legacy 2.5 blue with a tow bar alright. Very well looked after, credit to you!
I know the tax is insane but I always had a thing for Subarus and at the price it was going for I thought I'd give it a try!

Thanks all for your advice re the phone mount. Next challenge, how to remove it!

I didn't want to make a mess or do any damage, so I left it :)
Thanks for your comments, I really loved the car, my second Legacy.

I don't know if you will see this after this time, but this week is what you bought the Legacy for :D. In 2010 my work took me into the ice and snow of housing estates all over south Dublin and I never got stuck anywhere. I hope that it's still going well for you.
    Jim.
