Police clearance /fingerprints

I've been garda vetted for my job in a preschool but need police clearance for a time I spent in America over 20 years ago. I've no problem with this but one of the forms is for fingerprints.
I've just been to the garda station and was told to come back tomorrow between 9-5 and they will do it. There's a fee of 85euro!!! I'm stunned.
Has anyone else done this form ? Is there any other way to get fingerprints?

Why "stunned"? I think most would agree that vetting staff who work with small children is an absolute essential for both the provider and the parents of the children. The gardai are providing a service for you, why wouldn't you have to pay?

I think it’s excessive. I got Garda cleared for GAA coaching. Had to provide quite a lot of background info, which presumably has to be Cross checked and verified by someone in the gardai. So a certain amount of time and effort. This was free.

Book a flight to the USA and get it done there then.

I don't think I was clear. I have no issue at all getting garda vetting. Fingerprints are not required for garda vetting. I've already got that and have got it more than once for both work and a sports club.
I'm talking about getting my fingerprints taken by the guards and then I'll be sending the prints along with some other forms and a fee to the FBI to get police clearance from America.
I was "stunned' at the 85euro fee to have my prints taken. I'm providing the form the prints go on and the guard said it will take less than 5 mins. Other than using the guards ink pad , the forms having nothing to do with the guards. I'll be taking the form away with me again.

Again, I absolutely agree with Garda vetting and any other vetting/training or policies to ensure child safety.
I just didn't realise that getting my fingerprints taken would cost that much.

Surely the preschool should have to cover the cost?

For the FBI to do the check, it's about €20 per test. Did you stay in the same place whilst in the USA? I'm sure there are other ways to get the fingerprints, but I'd wonder if the FBI would accept them, and if the preschool would accept anything but a report from the Gardai?

    I never mentioned Garda vetting.
