    Keep checking https://www.motortax.ie/OMT/changeOwnership.do

Once changed over you can request the pin & tax online.

This, you don't need to wait to receive the book, you can tax it as soon as the name change is recorded.

Tax is only out 8 days, I doubt you'd have trouible from a Gard, but don't park on the street as a Warden may give you a ticket .

There won't be the slightest bit of trouble if a guard comes across a newly bought car that's only out of tax by a week. Get real.

Sometimes I wonder if the scaremongers on Boards actually live their lives in accordance with their posts, doing everything by the book with no exceptions and following the law to a tee - never driving a car that's a out of tax by a day, never going 1km over the speed limit, etc.

OP, just to be clear, you can drive your new car on the road without any issue. Unless your last name is Kinahan then no guard in the country is going to come down on you for driving with a tax disc that's expired by one whole week while you're waiting for the logbook.

Jesus, look on the Garda Twitter thread ffs :)

There's people completely taking the p155 and nothing comes of it for ages.

If you are genuinely waiting on the Tax Disc I don't think a Garda is going to run you over the coals for it.

I'm sure that everyone the Gardai stop say that they only bought it. The fact that you get nothing when buying a car makes it hard to prove that you only bought it, bar a invoice from a dealer. Until the change is on the system then a Garda will be suspicious and when it's on the system you can pay and carry a copy of the receipt. But meet the wrong Guard and they can still do you for non display.

In private sales it's common practice for the buyer to take a picture of the logbook with the new details and date of sale filled out for this very reason.

Yes, I'd avoid parking in public areas where wardens are around as they're just going to see an unattended car with no tax disc and no explanation.

It's rare but can happen, I met an awkward garda at a checkpoint once that really scrutinized the car and when pissed he couldn't find anything wrong gave me some smart arse comment about the car. Needless to say, if you gave lip back you'd get the full of it...

Most are alright if treated as people and not gardai though

You mean the VLC that's in your name already? You're going to scribble different dates on it and take a picture every morning before you leave the house? With your plate number on the insurance disc in the window?

    Good luck with that.

My girlfriend had this problem but got a ticket while parked for not displaying tax.

She wrote to them explaining why and they canceled the ticket.

You'd wanna run in to a right prick of a guard to be done.

You're confusing something. Telling someone that something is illegal doesn't make you a scaremonger, it's only the answer to a question. Either it's legal or it's not. There's not much room for opinion.

If you ask me "Is it correct that I get a fine when I don't pay for parking, I just popped into the shops for 5 minutes?", I'll say "yes, that's the way it works".
If you ask me "Is it correct that I got a fine for going 100 in an 80s zone, everyone was doing it and I was the only one stopped", I'll say "yes, that's the way it works".

That doesn't mean you're the devil in person if you break those rules. It doesn't mean as soon as you break the rule you will get caught and sentenced to death. It doesn't mean I don't break or bend those rules myself. It means "If you get caught, yes, you'll have to suck it up and pay the fine, so do with that information as you please".

No if I had a car with no tax and not in my name, sure I just bought it yesterday could work for years.

Op you will be fine. You come across as a genuine person and the gard will see that too and the situation you are in.

Unless your car is in sh1te and you look suspicious the gard won't be awkward or scrutinize your car. Unlike some I think you be fine to drive with no tax until you get the log book.

What I wonder is do they have lives to live at all
