Petrol 7 seater for 10k? Is there such a thing?

I currently have an 05 corolla verso that is slowly falling apart. I want to upgrade. Funds are limited. We don't do enough mileage for a diesel.
Do I have to buy another verso? Are there any other options?

You'll get a petrol Mazda5 or VW Touran well within your budget. Not many petrol versions of either sold past 2008 though.

Mazda 5 only 2.5 seats in second row.
I have 2 high back boosters and an extended rear facing seat to fit in there.

    Do you need 7 seats?

If you could live with 6, have a look at a Honda FR-V.

The newer Verso is quite nice.

Yes must do. Thanks. I haven't looked at them yet.

They are in short supply, and Honda stopper making them in 2010.

I just sold my 08 petrol.

They are a great car IMHO. Solid, reliable, loads of features, not massive for a 6 seater, good boot with all seats filled, something that can't be said for most 7 seaters.

A 2.0 Galaxy? Will have to allow for mileage/age for the budget.

Tax, insurance and running cost of 2 litre petrol is too high.

You could always buy a diesel and take it for a blast once a week.

I was looking at an Opel zafira online. Looks like a UK import. 2014 for 15k. Its 1.4 petrol. Can someone explain how a 1.4 engine is big enough for that size car. There's clearly new technology I don't understand. I see the new Skoda kodiaq comes in a 1.2!?....for a 7 seater?
Also I've never had a UK import. Any cons?

It's a turbocharged engine. A turbocharger can squeeze more air into the same size engine, which means it can combust more petrol. In other words: You have a smaller engine that can do as much work as a bigger one.

So a 1.4 petrol might output as much power as a 2.0, with the added bonus that when you don't put the pedal to the metal, it doesn't go through as much petrol as a 2.0.

Turbochargers have been around for decades, and every diesel that was built in the last 20+ years has one. But they're becoming more widespread in petrol cars, because they help saving fuel, and for some reasons insurances/taxes are cheaper with a smaller engine, even when they output the same power as a bigger one.

It has to be said that a turbocharged small engine is a lot more complex and prone to issues than the one in your Toyota. FWIW you can get the 1.6 valvematic in the Verso easily in the UK.

Charles Hurst has one in Belfast but it’s the base model.

    Oh ok. Good to know.

Bear in mind that a 1.4 turbocharged engine might be no more economical than a 2.0 engine, as you have to floor it a bit more often which will eat fuel.

But tax and insurance would be far less. So that's something.
