Resale value of a SW or Tourer

All other things being equal, do SW/Tourers keep their resale value as their equivalent saloon or hatchback models?

I'm currently looking at the new Renault Megane sport tourer and a friend made an off the cuff comment about resale value of tourers? Your opinion please...

No they don't. That's often partly because they usually cost more in the first place and not as many people want them second hand.

Buy the car you want, not what someone maybe 10 years down the road wants.

Pertinent point if you're planning to trade up in 3 years, doing PCP etc.

Yeah, but doesn't PCP guarantee a minimum price?

In my case it would be no PCP and a possible turnaround in 4 years.

It does, but the aim is to have enough equity in the car that you can go again without a big deposit again. It's a fallback.

Personally I'd buy the estate, it's a nicer car than the hatch and more practical.

I'd buy for myself and not with an eye on what other people want, but I may be the oddity.

    Ms

If you like it buy it. just get it in a colour that is easy to sell on when you want to change it like, silver, red or blue. Not something like yellow or orange or it would be very hard to sell on after.
The Scenic is a fine car too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Buy the car that suits your needs and feck your friend with her off the cuff comments.

Yeah, but the OP is either concerned about resale or they aren't. A Renault estate is not going to have a great resale value. I'm not Renault bashing here, that's just the reality of it. If that doesn't bother the OP then great. If it does bother them then fair play to the neighbour for pointing it out

    (Surely?)

Agreed, seems reasonable for a friend to ppint out you may lose more money on an estate before youve bought the car... At least then once you know you can factor that into the buy decision in advance.

Does it hold true generally for all marques that an estate would be less desirable and worth less?

Not a comparable car but i thought say bmw 5 series estates had good residuals? There are far fewer estates second hand so while less in demand, supply is less so you could do no worse than with a saloon on residuals or is that not true in practice?
