What did the NCT do to my car?

Did NCT last week on 08 S80 2L petrol. Everything is ok with it, slightly high milage at 195,000 km.

Anyways everything ok with the NCT apart from shocks. Driver side one is now gone, according to tester.

As I start driving car away from centre the engine is making a strange whining noise at 2,000 rpm and low speed. It's driving fine, no issues apart from this noise, if I fully depress the clutch it goes away and when driving at 100 km/hr it's not there.

I'm getting both the front shocks done, but I'm just wondering what is the noise and what did centre do to cause it to appear. More importantly will it go away when shocks done?

Sounds like a clutch issue and the NCT didn't cause it, they might just have pushed it over the edge but it's not their fault that you have a clutch problem.

    Clutch release bearing maybe

Would you not see it on rev counter with the needle jumping up and down?

Not being funning but why don't you raise your concerns with the NCT? Nobody here can diagnose a fault from the keyboard. And the import of this thread seems to imply that the NCT did something to your car, which is probably unfair to put it mildly.

While I'm saying they did something to car, I also accept that they have to perform tests on it. It definitely is a different engine sound pre and post test. There's always odds that something can go wrong with car, I'm not impressed that it happened during NCT, but I can't blame them specifically.

I was more wondering if people could assist in a diagnosis based on symptoms.

I think you cannot blame them at all. Sounds like your clutch and release bearing needs to be replaced.

Indeed, or some other calamity that is consistent with fair wear and tear on a near 10 year old car with highish mileage on it.

As I said above, this is one to be raised direct with the NCT, particularly as the assertion is being clearly made that they are responsible for causing this during the test.

Let the mech that does the shocks have a listen/drive. They should be able to tell you what the story is.

So he's 99% certain it's power steering motor. Relieved it's not likely something bigger, just hope this doesn't fail the NCT during the retest!
