Apologies if this is something asked far too frequently here...
Basically last week I was in a trance and foolishly sped down the motorway, easily going 10-15kph over limit.
And of course a Garda was standing on the side of the road and assumedly saw me well before I saw him..

How long does it typically take to get these speeding letters in the post? I'm driving myself cracked each day checking the post box

How long would it take for the vans to issue a ticket? I was going around 88-89 (by my speedometer) in an 80 zone and passed a speed van.

Would this speed be enough for a ticket? How long would it take?

6 weeks could be less or more its something could come through in 6 months.

Cop with gun needs to stop you.

    Definitely didn't stop me anyway.
I've googled so many different scenarios about it, saying it depended on if he had a gun or one on a tripod etc etc
    Honestly haven't a clue but I don't recall seeing a tripod..
Why would he be there with a gun though if they can't just send letters?

I'm sure I sound completely cliche but the anxiety alone this has given me the past week is enough to make me focus on my driving so much more.

Gardai in car or on bike will use a gun which they will pull you over or get another unit to stop you up the road.

If you were really fast and they did catch you but didn't pull you they technically could send you out a speeding fine but in Ireland they tend to stop you as to get to see who is driving and get your licence and address so they can say they stopped bob or bobella.

Van will catch people coming towards and can also catch going away from rear doors of van.

Gardai have around 10 gatso and then go safe deploy the rest.

You are more then likely fine as you weren't stopped.

Thank you for that, it's handy to know but hoping to never require such knowledge again! I never realised the vans were seperate either, I thought that they were all just Gatso vans!

Cops use to have only 2 years ago one white and one green then they changed when go safe came in and got 10 transits.

Go safe vans are any type of van and different colours also.

They do have stickers on them but they are non reflective so not so visible at night.

The cops do have 1 or more but not many hand held type which mount on tripod where it takes picture of reg but this is very rare.

There is usually a bit of say 5km/h extra given before they give a ticket.
