Motorcyclists and cyclists feel free to join in :P

For example, during the half time of an important World Cup soccer game. The RSA want you to make a point of your own, what do you say? You have only 10 seconds.

I’d say speed doesn’t always kill, keep left unless overtaking and never use the left hand lane of a roundabout if going past 12 O Clock (unless road markings say otherwise).

I timed myself saying that and it can be comfortably done in 10 s :p

Don't buy a brand new car just to save money on annual tax.
City driving? But a turbo petrol and not a turbo diesel.
Tbh I'd need about 10mins ad break for mine

The middle lane on a motorway is to overtake the left lane. Not for day dreaming.

Indicators, use your fcuking indicators. (repeat x2)

All of the above plus slow down speed limits are not targets. Am I over 10 seconds.

BMW drivers also need to use indicators. *repeat until 10s are up*

Don't give your baby the car keys while you are strapping them into their seats. If they lock themselves in by mistake, it won't be fun trying to get car open without keys.

    Ok, next time I'll remember:

    Water (0% alcohol) bad.
    Whiskey (42% alcohol) good.

Turn your fcuking fog lights off when not in a poor visibility situation.

Use your parking brake when stopped in traffic instead of sitting with your foot on the brake pedal.

Be spatially aware. Know your vehicle size. It's all too easy to hit your wing mirror at the Supermac's Drive through. Could you live with the shame?

If you don't know how to use a roundabout properly, please return your licence and take the bus instead.

Just on this, newer cars with an electronic handbrake can leave the brake lights on when using auto hold. It won't leave them on if you manually engage the handbrake but it takes a few seconds to knock it off again so not as quick.

Basically if you're behind me on a hill say, you're gonna be looking at brake lights lit up when stopped.

Seen as you're talking about brake lights, it put this question into my head that I've always been meaning to ask, but never have...

If I'm pelting down the road using cruise control, at 120kmh, but I know my exit is next, so i decide to drop my speed, using only cruise control to set the speed lower, say 80kmh for argument sake..

I havent touched the brakes themselves, but the car has been told to drop it's speed by 40kmh.. will the brake lights show?

no I don't think so. they really should be on an accelerometer that turns them on if you slow down.

    2. Learn to use a roundabout.

    Please combine the above points

It would be the same as just taking your foot off the accelerator at 120 and slowing down, no brake lights will show.

As for the poster complaining about brake lights when stopped. My last and current auto recommend not to take the car out of drive and hold it on the foot brake.

There should be a campaign around:

"Is this the best decision I can make right now?"

3 weeks ago, I got hit by someone who ran a red light, because no traffic came through a junction as they were coming up to it. They knew they had a red light. it was already red for some time before they got to the junction. They were talking to me about how long they'd been driving and something like this never happened to them before. Then they noticed my son in the car.

Everything we do while driving has an impact on others around us. What's the best way we can go about it to minimize the negative consequences of our decisions?

Just keep repeating "Get a Dashcam" until the 10 seconds are used up.

Why? It isn't admissible evidence in Ireland.

My 10 seconds? Put down the fcuking phone, take out the headphones and concentrate on actually driving your vehicle.

That doesn't really stand out. What does it make you think about in particular with regards to your driving?

There's advertisements all over telling you to slow down. Telling yourself again is going to do what?

Granted it's not that catchy and on reflection l think I stole it from some old campaign.

On the other hand if you only have one 10 second slot are you going to use completely new copy or try to reinforce tried and tested?

    I'll try again later.

What do you mean by tried and tested? Most people who drive dangerously think they are safe enough for themselves. A lot of crashes happen with at least one person driving slower than the other.

You can't put out the same message again that's been shown to be ignored by the people it's meant to be aimed at.

I was just posing the question really.
So you reckon we go with a completely new concept?
I'll give it a go later.
I't's an interval thing so I'm thinking something with the impact of Riverdance.

If its electronic you shouldn't need to knock it off, doesnt it just auto-disengage when you drive away?
All the ones I have seen do this...

haha, Riverdance could well do with being limited to 10 seconds! :)

I was only asking, because what you were saying didn't really have anything definitive in it. They're easy comments to make, but I don't feel they've much substance to'em.

    elperello wrote: »

    Yes.

The new campaign should be that "Inappropriate speed kills". Not forgetting that the current "Speed Kills" campaign has resulted in thousands of motorists now travelling at 80km/h on all roads regardless of the posted limit being higher or lower as in their minds they aren't speeding

Plenty of roads with 80km/h limits where it's dangerous to do 20km/h and there's also loads of roads with 60km/h limits where it's relatively safe to travel at 80km/h.

10 seconds is very short to make an impact with a new concept. My first reaction would be to accuse them of tokenism and refuse the gig. But if we are going ahead it has to be derivative, thus underlining previous ads or very catchy.

Jee you are a hard taskmaster, I'm glad I never worked for you!

Here's a quick one to prove I'm not slacking.

Video shows guy driving too fast - usual imagery, loud engine notes etc.
Pan to speedo showing over 120 limit.
Pan to trip meter showing figure (this will be the number of deaths on the road last year)
Solemn voiceover pointing out that's what the number represents.

    There is no campaign.
We have to make a big impact and hope it grows like Riverdance or else just try to reinforce other ads.
    See my post above.
Maybe that could develop into a series with different road situations using your Inappropriate Speed Kills tagline.

Please be aware that people live on main roads and need to be able to reverse into their driveway so they can safely drive onto road rather than reverse into traffic when exiting driveway. It is actually illegal to reverse into main road from driveway. Cannot tell you how many times I have been beeped at, given finger and shouted at by aggressive drivers (often with my children in car) when indicating, pulling in and then waiting for safe time to reverse into my own drive. This is a busy urban Road in Dublin 9 ( with houses all the way up and down..).people live in these houses!!! It's not the m50!! Big deal if someone pulls after indicating in without even blocking flow of traffic!! If you weren't driving at 80km/h in built up area it wouldn't be a problem!

Please remember that many main roads are also residential areas and have patience with residents reversing into driveway for safety and legal reasons!
