Volvo S40 boot trouble

I drive a 16D 2005 Volvo S40 and cannot open the boot. There is a constant 'boot lid open' warning on the dash and the boot cannot be opened eother manually or using the button on the key. The number plate lights also wont come on when I'm driving but just flick on and then off again of I press the button to open the boot when the car is off. Strange problem, but I'd appreciate any information on what may be causing it.

The boot wiring harness used to give a lot of trouble due to broken wires on previous models.

Yeah it would be the loom. Had it happen a few weeks ago with a constant boot open error, found broken wire in the loom just where it enters the boot lid

Cheers lands, is the harness hard to get in at?

I wouldn't bother repairing it as the boot harness can be bought quite reasonably from Volvo. It's easy to fit. Can't remember the cost but it didn't make sense to repair it
