VW main dealer part lookup

    Hi,

Tried to order a front right bearing kit for a MK5 golf from MicksGarage. Turns out there are two variations for a Golf front hub - a 3 bolt mounted version or a 4 bolt.

They say that they would need the main dealer part number and then they'll be able to tell me which.

Will a main dealer give me the part number over the phone or is there an online system for such a thing?

    Ring them and find out.
You may have to give the dealer your reg or VIN number.

Why dont you order the kit from the dealer? As it is a mk5 id say the price difference would not be that much unless of course you are buying the cheapest one they have on Micksgarage which in itself would be counterproductive as it would be more likely to fail quicker.

I'd agree with the above poster about sourcing parts from the main dealer. I've been pleasantly surprised in the recent past by the prices of genuine VW parts versus "cheap" websites.

Yeah iv found them fairly resonable aswell. I get most of my stuff there now. This past weekend i got 4 litres of Castrol 5w30 full syn and 3 litres of gear oil for 70quid. I priced it in the Autofactors and it was 90ish.

My car is a Mk 4 GTI Golf so parts arent exactly too expensive for it anymore.

fair enough - might just try that then

Me being a bit unthinking presumed that they wouldn't sell their parts to the public unless they were fitting them. Obviously that's not the case then.

Ah they will definitely sell stuff to you and you will be getting oem parts.

Just to mention there is nothing wrong with most of the stuff on Micksgarage only the cheaper stuff wont last as long and given you have a mk5 id be surprised if the dealer and MG are too far apart on price. It would be worth a phone call.

I thought that too at one time. I've found parts departments at Audi Galway and Hastings VW Westport to be very helpful. I have no connection to either business other than having had a good customer experience with both.

They won't always give you the part number if they think you are just calling for that info and not buying from them.

In your case you can get a price and then "double check" that its the right one by finding out which mounting bolt version so you can take a look and check for yourself ;)

Why don’t you just take a look at your own car and see which type you need?

lol I obviously thought of that but you should see the back of the hub - I can't even see the bolts.

It would need power washing the wheel hub to clear away the grease and muck. Looks like the CV boot leaked in the past as well which has been changed since so it's a mess back there.

I'm going to have to clean it up anyway prior to changing the bearing. Anyone know of somewhere in north county Dublin where you can pay for a power washer by the minute?

Either way after trying a number of dealers - each of whom said that they had/would get the part but none of which would share any details about the part - I found one who said that it was the three bolt version. However with the money off/voucher codes Micks Garage were doing I was able to get a bearing ordered for half of what the part from VW was costing. Optimal branded too which I believe aren't the worst out there.

Power washer? Whatever happened to a Half Inch paint brush and a drop of petrol?

I didn't even know about that...

Sounds like it would create quite the mess - benefit of one of those drive through washers is that I don't have to worry about the drive

The power washer on it's own won't remove grease. Also if the main dealer is given the reg number they will know exactly what part you need.
