Steps to maintaining a dinge-free car

NEVER park beside ANY of the following.

A car that’s been driven in to a parking spot as opposed to being reversed in.

A car that’s not parked exactly parallel to the lines.

A car parked with the wheels angled and not perfectly straight.

    A two/three door car.

    A car with L of N plates.

A car that looks in poor condition with scrapes etc.

    A car with child seats.

A car with child on board stickers.

A car with frilly dice on the mirror or hair accessories on the gear stick.

If you stick to this, you will hopefully maintain a dinge-free car.

The problems start when one of the above park beside you.

Simply leave car in bubble sorted.

Really? Well I never thought of any of those. Problem is you avoid all that and when you come back they have parked either side of you anyway.

That's good for a "ding" free car but doesn't do anything for the dinge.
For this I recommend keeping the zip covers from new tuxedos in the car and placing your kids into them. Every. Single. Journey.

Just park well away from the door in supermarket car parks and that will be half the battle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,102 ✭✭✭✭Del2005

I used to drive a small 2 door when I was learning. I never parked it straight between the lines and I never dinged a car, granted it was a Mini.

    Do the Bavarian Park.

Park along the centre-line between two spaces.

Pay for two tickets if you have to.

    This works great for me.

I'm amazed that car doors don't have padded edges...the number of scratches caused by this, and most spaces are tight enough..

I was reversed into a parking spot in a shopping centre car park today. I was waiting for Mrs Outtadat to come out of Penneys. A girl of roughly 10 got out of the front passenger seat and carefully opened the door and cupped her hands around it when she squeezed out of the door trying not to ding me the woman who was driving (presumably her mother) made a hames of parking when driving in and ended up too close to my car.

Great to see people are instilling respect for other people's cars and property into their kids.

Terrible advise in a supermarket. This would mean that everyone would have to squeeze their trollies between 2 cars and the spaces are too small for modern cars anyway.
Guaranteed recipe for scrapes and wrecked door mirrors.
Besides the whole reverse into a spot thing is a silly obsession by some people.
Some spots, especially in one way systems, are specifically angled that you can't reverse into them, or only at great inconvenience to yourself and others around you.
Yes, you can drive out easier, but you still have to reverse into them, so you're not gaining anything.
You can reverse out of a space no problem with this great new technique, it's called paying attention. :D;)

    edit:
    Or buy a Citroen Cactus.

Don't bother parking far away surrounded by empt spaces, in my experience some wanker will still park next to you despite there being spaces all around you. Both sides and the row in front and behind.

Last time this happened their driver side was beside my car. Why would anyone purposely give themselves a squeeze to get out when they could have parked it bloody sideways anywhere at all?

Similar for places with high throughput like motorway services or filling stations.
Close to the door has highest turnover of cars so 10x more opportunities to get dings.

In this case just park in the EV space, as other car will be there for 30mins. Hurray..

Especially those early 2000's mpvs full of scrapes and dents, no tax and no NCT on any of them, probably no insurance either.

I bought 2 Cmax as my last cars, both owned by families by the state of them, dings, scrapes, child lock engaged in the rear and so on.
No one dares park beside me. :D

Spot on. Always park in the arse of no where in any carpark. Away from everyone. Depending on how busy the carpark is, I will park in two spots ( emtyish car park with plenty of spots )
Yes, I am one of those pricks. I want my car to be dents free at least for one year.

Had witnessed how my asshole parking saved my car. Park in two spaces and while I was still in the car on of those mammy mobiles parked. Due to me being an asshole I had a lovely half a space from other car. Look and behold, the little darling just swings the fecking door like a boss. That one was ment for my car, but I dodged it in best Matrix way. :pac:

Once parked at the far end of a carpark in a rental BMW in the UK, away from everyone. Came back later to a beautiful scratch all along one side of it. Some wanker did it deliberately for sure.

I drive an old car and the primary perk of it is being able top park it anywhere and not having to worry about it being vandalised / keyed / dented etc...

Having said that, during the week I parked in a tesco, well away from the entrance one evening with loads of free spaces around. I deliberately park in quieter areas for peace of mind (less hassle parking and also reduces chances of kids / cars moving around you when you're driving out). I always park exactly in between white lines.

When I came back out, there was a car parked very tightly with their drivers door against my passenger side - so tight that there was no way in hell the driver could have gotten out without touching my passenger door and without making life extremely difficult for him/herself.

It reminded me just how stupid some people are and why I'm glad not to have a new car. I'm beginning to think the Citroen Cactus is underrated...

people really do park next to you rather than in an empty car park, the other day I saw a guy move his already parked car next to another car and there were only the three of us in the entire car park. I thought it was a bit of a myth until then (and he parked it really crooked)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,363 ✭✭✭ezra_

I have been known to check the expiry dates on parking tickets beside me.

Nothing better than pulling in between two cars that have tickets up well after you are planning to leave.

Started doing that after some wagon ran her trolley up against my car.

I did not realise a carpark did not change once I left my car, that changes everything. Thanks OP.

Yes, I usually park on the far empty side and when I get back there's another car beside mine, in an otherwise empty area of the carpark. Why? Do they think that my car feels lonely, or what?
Schools carparks are the absolute worst.
And what do you do if you see someone making a ding, fobbing you off and driving away? Can you claim of their insurance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 937 ✭✭✭kerten

Not claiming I wouldn't care if someone ding my brand new shiny car but for the same reason I don't buy brand new cars that will stress me like that.

All precautions listed here are good but it will be dinged by an idiot regardless what you do. It may be better to get prepared for this than stressing out to prevent it happening.

Friends car after a quick stop in the short-term dublin car park. No CCTV in that area of course. Nice PDR job.

Never park beside a car with frilly dice or accessories in the car or if you see a makeup bag on the seat.

Never park beside a stereotypically girly car.

    You’re asking for disaster then.

    Frilly dice?

    Accessories?

Makeup bag on the seat, which you’ll see with your X-ray specs, yeah?

    WTF.

Don’t park beside people who shop in Penneys. That’s much better advice IMHO if this thread is anything to go by.

Steps to maintaining a dinge-free car?

Don't drive into other cars. ;-)

Park beside pillars in multi storey car parks...that reduces your chances of getting a dinge by 50%....

Is there a PDR fairy in Dublin airport short term parking. I wouldn't be complaining if that dint was fixed on the sly in a car park.
