last night I turned on bedside lamp. there was a pop! the bulb went.i had turned it on off a few times as i do if reading, etc. The bulb is slightly blackened. I got a couple of new ones, different brands. Neither will work. The fuse is similar to http://images.esellerpro.com/2272/I/966/709/PL09983x10-2.jpg no sign of burning at ends or in middle. the silver ends are really bright silver - no blackened parts. The plug is see through. i can see most of the fuse

Other products get power from the socket. is the lamp finished? What else could it be?

Take a similar fuse from another plug if you have one and see if this works.

Looking at it isn't indication enough that the fuse is blown - only way to test it is either put a continuity meter on it, or pop it into another appliance to see if it works. If it's not the obvious (fuse or bulb), it's time to check from the plug upwards. Again, a multimeter is your friend here to check that you have a complete circuit from plug to bulb holder. One possibility is a frayed cable, either at the switch, or through twisting - it's a common enough point of failure.

A good fuse exact same model from a clock radio will not work in the lamp. the lamp fuse will not work with clock radio. so the fuse is gone but something else too

The next thing to check would be the cable as suggested by mike and check the bulb socket it could be damaged.

Fueses blow for a reason. My guess is that the cable has shorted somewhere, which explains the crack you heard (arc) and the blown fuse.

It often happens that twisting in and out bulbs over the years twists the bulb holder, which in turn twists the cables beneath and pulls them loose. With the lamp plugged out, start disassembling, and see what you find...
