Hi does anyone know if you can replace a 1.6 from say a 04 audi a3 engine code bgu, with one from the older model a3 with say engine code avu.

Looking at pictures of them they look almost identicle.

    bgu

    avu

the only real difference I can see is the fuel pressure regulator and pipes. i'm thinking I could just use the intake manifold and injectors ect from the later engine.

Maybe someone will come on who has actually carried out this change successfully.
Otherwise you want to check very carefully - the AVU was fitted from 05/00 to 06/03 and the BGU is listed from 02/03 to 05/07 according to a list I came across.
While they may seem almost identical there could be one apparently small difference which you can't get around e.g. - the manifolds may not be interchangeable etc .
Having a chat with a dismantler can be very helpful also,

Just as a follow up, they are interchangeable. I had to use some bits off the old engine but they were all just bolt on. And i had to swap the clutch and flywheel.

And had to cut and rejoin the wiring for the cam position sensor as they had a different plug.

But the avu engine was about 1/3 the price.
