I was talking to someone today about the housing crisis.
he was saying there were 5 houses near him empty and abandoned

I had to drive to a nearby town a short 8 km each way drive. I counted 6 abandoned houses and 3 houses that are only sites.
all were on the side of the road . I could come up with another 10 in the locality that are on other side roads

why cant we use these houses and do them up
most of these are those cottages that that were built by the council. they would have 1/2 or a full acre with them

how many similar houses are in your area

In our town of loughrea when the crash happened they were building a few estates.
Crash happened and they became ghost estates.
Then you had the local idiots that started smashing the windows of these semi built houses.
They were some eyesore with boards and gates everywhere.
Eventually the whole lot were sold off to nama who sold them off at fantastic prices and coming to the present day the ghost estates are now fully functional family estates.

There's one up the road from me and there's only 30 odd houses in my estate. I've seen people working on it so it's probably lined up for someone, but it has been vacant at least 4 months now.

Ireland is rapidly urbanising plus another phenomenon I have noticed people moving back to to towns and cities, it use to be that people wanted to live in the countryside build their own house that's reversing unless its building in the choice bit of countryside that are near the big cities.

    This is a good example

Mary Robinson is selling her home in Mayo and moving back to Dublin to be near her childen.

Its a huge change in Irish society going right back to the Céide Fields there is evidence that Irish people preferred to live in isolated from each other and eulogised rural living.

Quite a few...fine houses that were left in disrepair and are no longer fit for use. Mostly, it was an elderly person who was in too large a house for one and the house has been vacant since death. It's amazing how quickly a house deteriorates when the heating isn't put on, etc. The joys of living in a damp country.
No ghost estates but the odd house that has only the blockwork done.
