Family car - Octavia vs Avensis vs Mazda6

I'm thinking of upgrading in the new year my 2010 Mazda3 hatchback as I need some more room to carry around baby gear as well as shopping etc.

I was looking at the following cars new but will consider second-hands 2 years old or newer.

Skoda Octavia 1.6 Diesel Ambition Saloon- €26750
Toyota Avensis 1.6 Diesel Luna Saloon - €30635
    Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel Executive Saloon - €29995
    Mazda 6 2.2 Diesel Executive SE Saloon - €31295

My main requirements, in order, would be:

    Space
    Reliability
    Fuel efficiency
    Decent spec

Sad I know but performance and exciting to drive is not a major consideration.

I haven't driven any yet but I'm being attracted to the Octavia due to space and price. However I do like the look of the Mazda 6. Any opinions?

Do you need diesel?! What mileage are you making?

I would rather get the Octavia 1.0 TSI DSG Style for €27k.

It would probably be around 30k kilometres per year.

How come no estates , if space is a requirement?
You think about the i40 ? or Optima Sportswagon

I really dislike the look of estates, they have never clicked with me at all.

I'm definitely willing to consider other cars, will look at those 2.

The Mazda 6 is being replaced with a new model sometime in 2018 and the Toyota Avensis is just a second facelift of a car that was launched back in 2009 so you would want to be buying either brand new at a heavily discounted price to consider a new one at this stage. The Octavia while has a big boot and not too far off interior space, is from the segment below either of the above which is why the price is lower.

You should consider a Passat or Mondeo also:

I bought a 2016 2.0 Avensis Excel in the UK a couple of months back. It came in at about €22k. Car was about 16,500 and VRT just a bit with €5k. For that I got a car with 8k miles, new condition, electric heated seats, LED adaptive headlamps, 18" wheels etc. The 2.0 gives a useful amount of poke too.

It is actually really good to drive, it handles well and eats miles. Economy isn't much over 40mpg across tanks but to be expected with the mix and style of driving in a relatively heavy car.

The Peugeot 508 which is a lovely car by the way and the Opel Insignia are two more well worth considering. The Opel Insignia is a new model that only came out in the last few months.

What about something less ordinary more for family like a Renault Scenic or a Ford S-Max more space in them too.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Definitely try to get a 24hour test drive on those. They are all good cars in terms of your requirements.

Wife has an Octavia as the family car and it's seriously impressive for space and reliability. Android auto as standard and a load of good simple extras. If your married dual ac is a relationship saver and heated seats if she is the cold type make great additions. Simplicity at really good value. But you'll need to drive one like all the others.

At 30k a year your more than likley into diesel territory. But do check the car costs out compared to petrol. Skoda diesels cost more than petrols currently by a few thousand. That's border line the difference in fuel over 3 to 4 years. So if your keeping for 7 years then fine. If your looking to switch in 3 years if PCP then you won't save a single cent in fuel costs.
