In a line manager postion for a QA tester in the last few months , he joined us earlier in the year

in recent weeks ive noticed we arent really getting what we want from him , but he has shown good work in the past

he has alot of medical appointments which he needs to leave 15-30mins some days which when ive been asked i said no problem

this week , we have a deadline tomorrow in my role i have to sign off my area , because he has so much outstanding work i cant sign off which means we miss the deadline

he arrived in alot later than usual this morning , when i confronted him about the work and not being able to sign off he didn't seem to care which i thought was strange

few mins later he admits to the team he was late because he was out last night

im absolute raging bad enough we will miss the deadline but his care free attitude arriving in late and then saying he was out im fuming over

    any advice what to do?
should i keep it to the deadline or incorporate arriving in after a night also

You need to keep track of your team's work to ensure that it is completed. Complaining about missing a deadline is too late.
Talk to your employee, say his work is suffering, (give examples) and work out what he need to do to address it. Find out about underlying issues; he may be struggling for some reason. Then work out a plan with him to address those.

The lateness in itself is not always a problem (many people work late for example, and a bit of flexibility does not go amiss). The quality of the work is the issue to focus on.

Exactly what is said here. Maybe it's too much work ? Can you not jump in and give a dig out and ensure the deadline is met?

I'm not making any accusations I'm sure your good at what you do, but we have managers here and they do sweet FA, They give us stink if something is late but make no effort to help anyone.

It's supposed to be a team manager included.

It's supposed to be a team which some managers now believe the work is beneath them.

i was in his role and moved up the ladder and still do alot of the work he does

we speak on a daily basis , last 2 days i spent carrying out what he should of had done on the 19th , he has working sitting there from the 12/14th of this month

majority of his work is Done and he has to get the users to sign off its nor a difficult job , i told him last week to stop emailing them and pick up the phone and call them he never did

his response this morning when i told him we may miss the deadline "well thats no bother like" i was so shocked how he responsed i dont think i grasped till after

then when i realized he was till half pissed from last night it made sense!

It's time to speak to HR and start disciplinary procedures.

If you are his manager, call him in and have a chat, and tell him black and white your not happy with his work, or his attitude. Thats what managers are for.
If you are a manager, you need to be authoritative and try and resolve the issue. As other posters have said, maybe there is under lying issues, you just never know what goes on in peoples private lives. Then again, maybe they are not enjoying the job any more and just dont give a toss.

People can do what they want in their spare time, so the fact he went out is of no concern to you, even though you know its the reason he was late and its defiantly frustrating. On another note, if he defiantly was pissed, maybe you should have pulled him up on this at the time, as i wouldn't find this acceptable.
