What tyres for a Nissan Leaf

Hi. Apparently I need 2 new front tyres after only 20k Kms and I was told by the main dealer that I had to buy 'low rolling residence' tyres that cost €120 each or I could lose up to 25% in my range! My local garage says that this is rubbish and I can use any tyre on the car. Does anyone know which one is telling the truth? Does anyone have any recommendations for tyres for a Leaf? And is it normal to need new tyres after only 20k?  Thanks.

Very heavy car and tyres wear uneven on that car.

Look up tyres on oponeo or eiretyres etc....

Do not get Nissan to fit they will charge way more.

I got 30k km's out of the original tyres. All depends on your driving I suppose.

I got Goodyear efficient grip performance for the second set and have only got 20k km's out of those from the front two. A bit to go yet on the back.
You can put any tyre you want on the car but like all tyres its a balance between hard, long wearing and poor grip.... to soft, great grip but wear quickly and everything in between. I doubt any tyre will lose you 25% on range.

I'm replacing the fronts now with Bridgestone as they were cheaper and I wanted to see if the cheaper tyre made much of a difference to range. I have range to spare so I don't mind if I do lose range and it will be a good exercise to see if this rolling resistance thing is a load of BS or not.
Note, my tyres are for the 17" wheels so they are more expensive than the 16" that goes on the SV model.

What make and model tyres are coming off yours?

    The SV has 205-55-R16
    The SVE has 215-50-R17

Ok so far I have been quoted

Hankook Kinergy....B rated for efficiency and B rated for road holding - 80 quid from local garage

    Atlas Autoservice
    Premium : Michelin Energy Save : €125 each {0 In Stock, Next day stock}
    Premium : Goodyear Efficient Grip : €100 each {4 In Stock, Ready to fit today}

I have Continental e-Contact on the back and Firestone Roadhawk on the front. The firestone looks to be cheaper tyre so I was looking to see if I could get better range with more expensive tyre but not sure if it will affect it.....

A mate was saying as well I should have all the same tyre on the car and that could be issue but don't really have the cash to swap all 4 now, all that is wrong is one front one is losing air and garage can't find a problem with it....

If I were you I would get this: https://www.eiretyres.com/product/R-303015?&ID=psm_rd_ie_tyresnet&Country=IE cheaper and better than either Michelin or Goodyear

I was actually looking at Nokian as well but wasn't sure if their Summer tyres were up to scratch or not as their roots are in winter tyres for the Nordic region.

Have you used those specific tyres yourself? How would you rate them for km and noise?

Will any A rated tyre work ?

    Thanks for the response.
I have Michelin 16" at the moment.

I think I'll go for Bridgestone this time. I'll let you know how I got on in about 18 months time...

    Any tyre will "work".

Its down to whether it represents good value for money and isn't noisy and doesn't result in you finding a ditch! :)

Some say the ratings are a bit of a joke.

I got advice from American eGolf forum....

Recommendations depend on your preference. The main problem is that Low Rolling Resistance specs in US are binary Yes or No. There is no indication of how much lower one tire may be than another. So, within the tires that have LRR or "EcoFocus" rating, I have these recommendations:
Lowest Rolling Resistance: Bridgestone EP422 Plus
Handling, LRR Balance: Continental PureContact with EcoPlus & Michelin Primacy MXM4

The Continental has long tread wear and low price, Michelin is the most expensive. Strangely, there is a VW OEM specific EP422 Plus that has only a 540 treadwear rating yet the regular one has a 640 treadwear rating.

I'm running a set of Dunlop SP 4's have run them year round since Feb '15

Magical tyre, fantastic on cold wet ****ty back roads. Got 32K from the front, back still good but approaching change after 45K

If you haven't driven on full winters it takes a little getting used to as the car feels like there's a little slip when you corner hard but it's just the sipes flexing.

Thinking of trying the Nokians next, supposed to be even better.

@Shefwedfan: Tyres sold in the US are generally different to what we get - you won't find any of those particular models for sale in Europe.

How do you guys wear your tires so quick? On the first Leaf we had 46k km and still enough grip to keep us going for at least 5k km. Michelin Energy Saver tire.
On the second, I have just rotated the tires at 30k km (20k done by myself) and still have 4 to 5mm all around so an easy 5-10k on them. I do drive much harder the second Leaf and it’s with 17” wheels as opposed to 16” on the first one. Dunlop Enasave EC300 tire.
I hipermiler friend of mine did 70k on his original tires with some thread left, but he’s an extreme example.

So what would be the main reason people do get tires worn so quick? You can not really drive fast in Ireland, especially on the small roads... so I wonder...

I got Dunlop Sport Bluresponse and they are very good in the wet.

It's important in any Ev to have a good wet tyre because it's no use trying to pull out at junctions or roundabouts if the traction control won't let you move. The traction still kicks in now and then but they are good wet tyres.

I found the EC300's long lasting but dangerous for an Irish Climate in the wet.

The ec300's are very very expensive last time I checked.

I would never recommend these tyres to anyone.

Ideally yes all four tyres should be the same but as long as both front tyres are matching and both rear tyres are matching then you're all good.

Also, if a garage can't find out where air is coming out of a tyre then you really need to find a new garage. You don't need to be a rocket scientist to put a wheel into a bucket of water.

Boiledkitten - is that on a leaf?

I have gotten 52k km out of my 16" front tyres on my 151 leaf. I'm no hypermiler and drive on a mix of country and urban roads and the occasional motorway journey. I am replacing them now and have been quoted €106 by Nissan Belgard incl fitting.

What tyres are they quoting for?

For anyone in Cork looking for tyres.

Got 4 no. 205/55R16 BluResponse tyres balanced, fitted and tracked for €340 all in at Glounthaune Tyres.

Might be available cheaper elsewhere, but thought that wasn't bad. Plus they're a fairly small operation, so I didn't mind supporting them.

    I've no affiliation btw.
