Buying from a dealership that isn't SIMI registered

I'm interested in looking at a car from a dealership, but I've been doing my research and they are not registered with SIMI.

    http://www.simi.ie/

Is this a reason to be cautious? Where do I stand from a legal point of view if something goes wrong with the car?

I've never bought from a garage before, my only car so far was bought from a friend.

SIMI doesn't really do a lot to protect the consumer so in that regard, SIMI registered or not shouldn't really make much of an odds to how directly protected you are.

That said, it's usually the smaller or more fly by night outfits that aren't registered so in that regard I might tread with caution but the registration in itself doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the purchaser really.

There can be as many poor dealers out there with a SIMI member sign hanging over their door as there are poor dealers with no SIMI member sign hanging over their door. The SIMI are a lobby group or a mouth piece made up of member dealers that represent themselves, they don't represent or add extra protection to consumers.

Best thing to do is research the dealer in question and decide then if buying from them and their reputation for aftersales is worth it.
