I have one of these, really nice bit of kit. Very slim, but a bit of heft to them at the same time. To be expected at this capacity. Definitely worth a buy.

GB have a review section where people post photos of the items they received. I see a whole bunch of fakes.

How easy is it to spot a fake? Are Gearbest not an authorised Xiaomi seller?

(ALSO, 2 black available as of now, and 244 Silver available, BOTH showing at the same price, Eur13.87 before adding any code)

It is very difficult to spot a high-quality fake, ideally you need a genuine one to compare side-by-side with loupe.

If you have specialist equipment or knowledge you can measure capacity, performance etc and compare to a known genuine one.
    http://budgetlightforum.com/node/51270

It's estimated that 80% of Mi Powerbanks on the market are fake (ie fakes outnumber real 4:1). Best case scenario with a fake is that it just has a lower capacity. Worst case is that it sets your house on fire.

I can say with 100% certainty that Gearbest have sold fake Xiaomi products (earbuds, powerbanks etc) in the past. That doesn't mean everything they sell is going to be fake. It just means you need to exercise caution with any product that is known to be widely counterfeited.

Xiaomi have a verify thingy on their site^ for anyone that bought any off the last few battery threads if they want to check if legit. Curious myself, i'd say loads of fakes.

I do not know if any of these are real or fake, i did not follow the link, but GB have TONS of fake products on their site. Xiaomi products are one of the most common as there are so many.

Yeah, kinda important that little sidenote methinks. If there are that many fakes, personally I'd steer clear.

    This is mostly inflammatory.

Xiaomi dont make lithium cells. Xiaomi dont make the micro charge controllers. They're off the shelf parts. The clones often use the same parts and even the same factory.

As long as the fake has a very very simple circuit that prevents <2v or 4.5v< which it can be assumed it does when the far more expensive and complicated QC controller is onboard theres practically no fire risk unless you puncture the device.

It's true that counterfeits sometimes use the same parts. There is one important proviso - counterfeits often use rejected parts earmarked for destruction. Eg. batteries which did not pass QC tests, they were binned and then 'rescued' and sold under the counter by a dodgy factory worker.

Over and under-voltage protection do little if the battery itself has been punctured prior to manufacture or is otherwise inherently defective.

This particular unit uses a LiPo pack but counterfeit 18650-based power banks (of which Xiaomi makes several models) often use salvaged and re-wrapped 18650 cells. There is a massive black market for these in China; old cells intended for destruction are rescued, rewrapped and sold as new/functional. They are very dangerous.

    wholesale_18650_batteries2.jpg?14679085168410667126

    051741c63f18q3chchshhc.jpg

Basically I would caution against endorsing or using a powerbank which you know to be counterfeit. Saying that there is 'practically no fire risk' is very irresponsible advice. The companies who make counterfeits are chiefly concerned with imitating the overall look and general function of the product...they save money by not having to worry about component quality or safety.

To reiterate: I am not stating what you receive from Gearbest will be counterfeit. I am just saying they have been known to send fakes in the past.

Would you be able to test the capacity? Does it look as in the pictures? I really don't mind whether it is a fake or not as long as it delivers what it says on the tin. Thanks a mil for posting this!

Nice piece of kit****, fake or not!

Mine arrived today as well. Doesn't verify on the Xiaomi site either.

It's a nicer size than my Anker one, which is shorter and fatter. Will test to see how much juice I get out of it, and what the charging speeds are like.

    Am I reading this right?

People are confirming receiving seemingly counterfeit goods from a Boards.ie sponsor, and are actually ok with it?

I'd be up in arms, particularly when it's a product that puts the safety of my house and family at risk, which undoubtedly these power banks of unknown origin do.

Don't worry, I'm on to Gearbest about it. There is no way it's 10,000mAh, as far as I can see. I've had it here charging beside me for half an hour and it's gone from 1 bar to 3. My Anker with quick charge input still takes a good few hours to charge.

    Fair play.
I hope the Boards staff will take a close look at their response also.

Edit: Please post your query as to why these are not recognised as genuine on the 'manufacturers' website on the Gearbest forum, rather than by PM..
This is a public interest / safety thing if they are demonstrably selling counterfeit electrical goods.

Got mine today, a silver one and it verifies as genuine on the mi.com checker.

I got a previous generation Xiaomi powerbank from Gearbest, it was legit and I liked it so much I ordered another from them ... which was fake.

So they sell a mix, probably various suppliers and no real control/care of what they sell.

Also note the fake passed the code verification (probably hacked/stolen codes). So the scratch-label is reliable for proving fakes (if they don't pass they're most certainly fake) but can not be soley relied on for proving genuines.

How were you able to ID the fake if it passed the code verification?

Because I had a genuine one of the same model, same colour.

Side by side, there were a lot of subtle differences - font, print quality, physical quality of the aluminium shell, shape of the USB holes etc on the plastic top panel etc. Plus the fake had about 3/4 the capacity (I measured them properly).

Without the genuine side-by-side most people would have just assumed it was legit. The fake looks reasonably good and it functions as a powerbank should. But you've no idea about the quality/safety of the cell inside and whether it has all the protection circuitry (temp sensors etc) that the real one does.

Yea, now I don't know what to believe.

It doesn't have that Xiaomi flair and quality that I expected. Tried it out after charging it up and it was ridiculously slow. Doesn't bode too well. May have gotten carried away earlier..

Mine thinks its 75-100% charged after only accepting 1290mAh at a modest 1.3A(claims QC in and out, not doing QC in for sure). [Drained first]

I got one from Gearbest quite recently. Currently charging at 9.07v/2.11a from one of the 20,000mah packs that TomTop had on offer. (This has been used since purchase).

I've a good few Xiaomi packs (mainly bought from Banggood) and they all checked out on the page and all seem identically well made.

Got mine yesterday and inputting the 20 digit code as it is on the label, the Mi Checker site doesn't appear to recognise it. Is there any way to authenticate these? If they aren't genuine and seeing as there's a sponsored form on here we really should look to have the issue resolved.

Mine also wasn't showing quick charging when I tried to charge my Note 8 off it. I'll have another look at it when I'm home tonight.

If the 20 digit code isn't recognized that would suggest it's not genuine. That would be enough for me to get on to seller and ask them what the craic is. Make sure you are entering it correctly because sometimes a 6 will look like an 8 etc if it's not scratched off cleanly.

Check output capacity with a 5V/1A load if possible. Requires USB meter or similar equipment. Should be around 6900mAh. I would expect a fake to fall short.

For physical differences ideally you'd want a known genuine one to compare to (purchasing immediately on release usually guarantees they're genuine).

The differences can be subtle (the longer the product is on market, the closer fakers get) but generally the fit and finish of genuine Xiaomi powerbanks is superb and if there's anything about the fit and finish that looks underwhelming it would merit a closer look.

They would have been all over this in the past. And have previously banned Gearbest from the forum.

Well, we can't say with 100% certainty, but it looks like there's prima facie evidence that at least some of these are counterfeit.

The first step, I would suggest, for anyone whose code doesn't check out, is to start a thread in the Gearbest forum, and see what they have to say about it.

I bought a silver 10000mah from Banggood and received it last week all good. Saw black version on Gearbest flash sale and bought it. It arrived yesterday. Box looks identical however print looks fainter. Battery fully discharged. Charged it up plugged in my phone. It will not fast charge like the one I got from Banggood. Battery indicator dropped from four lights to three after 10 mins. How do I check validation code?

Did you use https://www.mi.com/verify/ or chaxun.mi.com(just a redirect) or chaxunmi.cn. My label says the latter, that worked, but the other fails to recognise.

The label also seems wrong, real ones have the scratcher on the left of the sticker, this has it on the bottom.

Capacity will probably end up around 3Ah @5v instead of the 6.9Ah the real ones are rated for and do reach.

I posted this message on the Gearbest customer service forum.

I am now certain mine is a fake. I purchased one from Banggood and code checks out. Code not recognised on the one I bought from Gearbest. Hologram authentication sticker shows a website under the MI the website wording is slightly blurred on the one I purchased from Gearbest. The Brown background on the sticker is darker than the one i purchased from Banggood and the hologram does not match. I attached the supplied lead into the power bank one end USB and other end micro USB lights flicker on suspect Gearbest one and remain off on the one I bought from Banggood. Text on bottom of unit is more blurred. On the good one from Banggood when you hit the power button you can see a smudge strip of light coming behind the LED not so on the Gearbest one.

    This is shocking and dangerous.
Gearbest you need to act immediately on this.

I checked both bought from tomtop 20k(one on offer 2 months ago and one just arrived today) and both
This is an authentic product. This is the first time this security code has been queried.

There is a difference in font color on box old one made(2017.3) is more brown and the one from today is black.
