    Hi all,

Would love to hear opinions about this but what do you think is the most important factor when buying a diamond?

I've been reading up on the 4Cs and fluorescence etc but I'm wondering what do you think is most important?

For example would you think it's important to go for excellent cut and then maybe just SI clarity or do you feel clarity needs to be much better but cut might not be as important?! Same for colour, fluorescence etc!!

    Carat.

No-one , sorry , maybe a gemologist or something, but no-one else will ever notice any of the other C's, except with a magnifying glass. If it can't be seen with the naked eye, it does not matter.

I'd say cut and carat. I went for an antique ring, 1 carat and excellent cut. Clarity would be an SI 2 so it has inclusions but you don't see them. It's a fabulous ring and always gets compliments!

Carat? Nonsense that's just the size. There's no point having a large lump of a rock that doesn't sparkle.

OP - Cut is without doubt the most important as that's what delivers the sparkle. Get the best possible cut you can afford, worth compromising on the others.

My wife has a 1.2c excellent (or whatever best possible cut is) on the GIA cert and when compared to next cut down 1.4c say it looked larger, due to the sparkle and how it catches the light.

    In order of importance:

    Cut
    Colour
    Carat
    Clarity

Yes you can see colour and cut with the naked eye, easily.

IMO which is all it is

A triple X cut that is a point 90 carat will to the naked eye look just as big if not the same size as a 1.1 average or poorly cut stone.

Anyone who tries to sell the whole thing being about size is a liar and an obvious sales person just trying to get people to fork out more for poorly cut stones that go above the pointer thresholds. You can go one further and check dimensions aswel as there are figures that certain sections of the stone should be within for the best possible sparkle in a triple ex cut.

In short never compromise on Cut. 3ex or don't bother.
    Compromise on clarity
Stick to G and above for GIA certified
Carat - depends how materialistic and vein the owner is IMO.

personally I think GIA are the only certs to be trusted. Their testing and specification process is massively different to all the others. For instance a D colour IGI or some other org may only come in as a G or F and you end up paying for the "D" premium tag - The same point goes for all other C's
