So whats everyone's opinion on the best course in the Dublin area to play. Will be in the area till Tuesday and looking for a good course to play. Looking for something that wont break the bank for green fees as well. So which course would people suggest.

Considering the weather we've been having and the weather we are due to have over the weekend I'd suggest a links course as most parklands would be pretty soft. The problem there of course is links courses carry a hefty green fee. I'd opt for Corballis but if you really want to push the boat out play next door to there at The Island. Parkland wise I've always liked Forrest Little and Corrstown. What part of Dublin are you going to be in?

I'd be inclined to recomend Druids Glen if I could only play one course

Failing that, Palmer course @ KClub

Other quality courses would be either of the Cartons (but leaning towards O'Meara), Kileen Castle, either Powerscourt, Luttrelstown. If you want to try Links there is Royal Dublin & Portmarnock.

Loads and loads more, but you won't go wrong with any of them

He asked for the best. I think apart from the Island, you have really recomended pretty average courses

Yea he also said he doesn't want big green fees either so he is a bit limited. I think he means the best he can get for the money he is willing to pay. OP what's your limit with regards green fee?

Trying to keep greenfees under 50 euro

    Under 50, Roganstown.
The links in portmarnock would be the cheapest of the links courses bar Corballis.

On teetimes.ie you can get Luttrelstown, Corrstown, St.Margarets, Castleknock or Forrest Little all for 30 euro or less. I think Luttrelstown gets my vote but they all are decent. You could also try ringing Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links and seeing if they have an early bird rate that you can avail of that might be in and around your price limit, otherwise I'd go for one of the above.

Id normally say Lutterlstown myself but after the rain we're getting id go for the links in portmarnock or corballis.

Supposed to be playing the K club tomorrow myself (Smurfit )Cant say Im particularity looking forward to it with the weather forecast.

    Agree

for €50, it would definately be Luttrelstown, best in area by far, but it does get a bit soggy underfoot in heavy rain.

Carton might be a good option, but deffo if you can get out in Portmarnock it is the best option for you in this weather.

Corballis.......no, no, no, no, no, no. It is cheap and cheerful, some good holes, some crap. Definately not a premium course

I played The Hermitage last week and it was both spotless and not as much as a drop of wet anywhere, here's a shot of the greens which were easily the best parkland greens I played this year

Not sure on best prices to get out there.

Jaysus . must hit there . that green is unreal.

There are not too many good / great coures on north side.

The links courses are ok . The Island the exception but all too expensive.

Luttrelstown or Margarets I guess .

Best cheap course is Corballis but love and hate place.

I wouldn't put Margarets and Luttrelstown in the same category, Luttrelstown the better course by far imo.

Margarets is a level above 80% of other courses in Dublin.
Agree Luttrelstown one of the best.

But, standard just very poor on Northside considering number of course and population - only about 4/5 course I like at all. Like, Wicklow - Kildare - Louth - Meath - Offaly - Laois all have better courses.

If someone offered me a game for free- would I take a day off work is a reasonable standard.

    Probably only on the follwoing.

    The Island
    Portmarnock Old
    Portmarnock Links

    Thats it.

That way of judging it would be based on your income then, the course cost would have to cover a days wage ha

I agree with what your getting at. Luttrelstown is a great course but I've played better outside Dublin for similar money, Concra Wood for one.

What about Seapoint " Links" with 35 euro rate for GUI members. Might be a good option with all the wet weather we have had

Yeah I'd say Roganstown - used to play it loads with a buddy over the winter back when in lived in Ireland. Always did a deal too for us.. 50 for two.

    No temp greens.

They won " best parkland greens " in Leinster for the last 4 years, a cousin of mine is head greenkeeeper there and he was aiming to make it 5

    Portmarnock Old trumps everything surely,
Followed by the Island , then Royal Dublin
Youd need closer to four 50s rather than one 50 to play though

Me personally would prefer The Island. Royal Dublin and Portmarnock - flat links have grown on me. But I prefer a course with larger dunes and variation in height - you get that in The Island.

You could look at it that way - but not sure price is an accurate reflection of quality in Ireland - strong link, but if you look at the likes of Royal Dublin at 160 quid - on a windy day you wouldn't be breaking your back to get there for free.

If someone offered you a round in Baltray 160 euro - you would be taking the day off work.

Now all of them rates are crazy and none of them would justify paying full rate.

Sorry a bit off piste - but for all the talk of great golf in Ireland - Dublin is very poorly served / for quality / value / variety.

Dublin (IMO) is one of the most poorly served areas in Ireland for golf quality - even a county Wicklow with 1/10th the population has better golf.

Nothing near Druids Glen in Dublin. Then the likes of Macreddin - Rathsallagh - European - top top level.

Then the 2nd tier in Wicklow - has a bit more of an interesting spin - Nothing like Wicklow around Dublin - Woodenbridge offers stunning surroundings even if an only ok course. Even the lower level Links option Arklow is a fine course.

Anyway - as a man who loves different courses - just a bit jealous and underwhelmed by Dublin golf.

I’d be pretty sure you could get a round on Baltray for €160 at weekends in the summertime.

Thats what it was this summer. Saturdays there's always space, very much a club to be seen to be part of than to play.

You can play for €50 before 10 at the moment.

I don't see that 50 euro deal on their website. I presume you have to ring them to avail of that?

Really Enjoyed having a hit today at Luttrelstown, really nice course to walk around and enjoy. Only cost 25 euro and had the course just about all to myself thanks to everyone that suggested it

Balcarrick is a decent course and €20 weekdays if I remember correctly. No idea what condition it's in after the recent weather though.
