My and the squad were out in Panti last wkend having gin and goss. We were all sitting at the bar and I suppose more so than other nights on the scene we were meeting more acquaintances than usual due to our location. A thing in our gang is that we call each other chicken and chuck and it occurred to me that a lot of the people we were meeting were also using the same expression, as in “hello Chicken!”. Got me wondering where the term chicken originated among us gays. I just don’t know. I remember Beth from Corrie (God how fab was she) used to call people chuck so maybe it came from there. Can any of u guys shed some light here? Maybe it’s a version of bear or otter etc? I really don’t know but soooo curious….

It comes from Polari (gay slang from about 100 years ago)

    Chicken means twink/young guy

It’s a fairly common term of endearment here, not just in the gay community. My Mam used to call everyone chicken.

Chuck is a fairly common phrase for loved ones in northern England too.

Thanks Babez and Crumbles. TBH, I haven't heard or used it outside the scene. Didn't know it was in the big bad straight world too. Crazy.

I've also found it to be used as a snarky put-down towards a younger guy if they appear to not know something on the scene - although the main perpetrator of that was delusional and didn't have a clue about what they thought they were an expert in, so it was just humorous really.

I used to share with this... er... "person". When it found out I was gay and started to call me chicken, honey and the likes, I said never ever call me that again.
And things went downhill from there....

"it"? - very disrespectful language there

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

I dont know the context but a gentle reminder to use language respectful of all.
