I was running the tractor engine very hard when the whole tractor started shaking,I went to turn off the tractor and only then I realised there was a banging noise coming from the engine, the oil and water levels were good.
I took off the sump expecting to find a broken con rod but found nothing out of the ordinary, Can anyone offer an opinion as to what the problem is!

Not sure if a 165 has balancing weights but our 575 had and when they went out of sink the banging and bouncing started. But it was a easy enough fix.

    Big end bearings most likely.

The banging noise from the top or bottom of the engine?

No sign of anything in the sump suggests could have dropped and bent a valve in the head.

If it dropped a valve it wouldn’t be running.

I was hoping to learn from others experience of similar problems before I decide whether to spend money on it at all.

Was the sump free from any metal filings etc?

    That's what I was thinking,
Also it's hard to pinpoint where the noise is worse but I would say it is near the front of the engine nearer the top than the bottom.

There was a few small shaving about 2 or 3 mill long.

Did you rotate the engine by hand and look at where the con rods big ends are. If you have shell bearing gone in a crank or two you would see it.

Did you take of the tappet cover. The push rods may have came away at the top. Happened to me once.
Turn the engine over by hand, might show up something.

    Are you my doppelgänger?:D
