Ive heard that 80% of the aiste goes for your gaeilge ability. Does this mean you could learn off an aiste with perfect grammar and come out with 80% of the marks without writing anything on the subjects that they give you?

No it's all related. If you get 0% in the ábhar you'll get zero overall. It's 80% for Irish if you write a relevant essay.

    Thanks for clearing that up.

The same applies in other language subjects.

Some people learn off a 'one size fits all' essay, but that's a risky strategy.

Best approach is to have a bank of linking phrases and vocabulary and then keep what you are trying to say simple. Dont try translating directly from English, that usually ends in disaster.

You could have a couple of standard paragraphs prepared for some of the more regular topics, but dont go the full essay route.

'I was discussing lowering the voting age with my gay friend, who now experiences marriage equality, when suddenly there was a traffic accident, caused by the heatwave we were experiencing due to global warming'. ;)

Would you happen to have any phrases or sample essays as notes?

Here's a thread hullaballoo started many moons ago:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=245889

Here are a few more (search for nathanna cainte - these will do for the oral too):

tá fadhb mhór í X ar fud an domhain
X is a big problem everywhere

sin croí na faidhbe dar liom
that's the heart of the problem in my opinion

    de réir cosúlachta
    apparently

    de réir dealramh
    apparently

    aisteach go leor
    strangely enough

    caithfear a aithint
    it must be recognised

    caithfear a rá
    it must be said

    caithfear a admháil
    it must be admitted

    cosúil le beagnach gach rud
    like almost everything

tá maitheas agus donas ag baint leis
there's good and bad associated with it

tá taithí pearsanta agam ar an ábhar seo
i have personal experience on this subject

    ainneoin sin
    Despite this

    feictear domsa
It seems to me (followed by that (go/gur/nach/nár

    dealraítear domsa
It seems to me (followed by that go/gur/nach/nár

    chun na fírinne a rá
    to tell the truth

    is deacair a chreidiúint
    it's hard to believe

    d'fheadfadh sé bheith níos fearr
    it could be better

    d'fheadfadh sé bheith níos measa
    it could be worse

    bheadh sé deacair a shamhlú
it would be hard to imagine

    Is oth liom a rá
    I regret to say

    Ar an gcéad dul síos
    in the first place

an chéad rud eile ná go bhfuil
    the other thing is that

    faraor géar
    alas/really unfortunately

    ní mór dúinn a aithint
    we must recognise

    léirítear dúinn sna meáin
it is shown to us in the media

    Chomh maith le sin
    as well as that

    bheadh sé sin go hiontach
    That would be great

    a mhalairt atá fíor
    the opposite is true

Mar a bheifeá ag tnúth le
    As you would expect

    samhlaigh
    imagine

    tógaimis X mar shampla
let us take X for example

    cur i gcás
    for example

    i ndeireadh na dála
at the end of the day

    ar an lámh eile
    on the other hand

    cuir mar seo é
    put it like this

    Deirtear
    it is said

    níl aon dul as
    theres no escaping it

    cén dochar
    what harm

ní bréag a rá go bhfuil
Its no lie to say that

    mar focail scoir
    as a final word

    cad faoi X
    what about X

    níl ach X
    there is only X

    dá bhfeicfí a leithéid
if the likes could be seen

    an gcreidféa
    would you believe it

    leis na cianta
for the last few years (cianta)

a luaithe is a tharlaíonn sé is fearr
the sooner it happens the better

an rud atá ag dó na geirbe agam ná
the thing that is burning the fat of me is..

    ní gá duit ach
    you only have to

caithfear dul i ngleic leis an bhfadhb
    the problem must be tackled

    is fearr deimhin ná díomá
    better be sure than sorry

    le cuimhne na seacht sinsear
    from time immemorial

    bailíonn brobh beart
    every litle helps

    tá X ina chnámh spairne
X is a bone of contention

    mar a dúirt mé cheana
    as I have already said

Ar chúis amháin nó ar chúis eile
    for one reason or another

    Ní féidir é a shéanadh
    it can't be denied

    Tá sé de dhualgas ar
    it's the responsibility of

    táthar ag tuar
    it is predicted

    níos minice ná a mhalairt
    more often than not

    ligeadh na maidí le sruth
    things were neglected

    ba chóir go mbeadh X
    there should be X

    nochtann na fíricí sin go
    these facts reveal that

    lá i ndiaidh lae
    day after day
