Fedora 26

Seeing as there was a thread about F25, thought I'd stick one up about F26!

Figured I'd waited along enough so swapped over to it for my desktop at work. All seems to be ok apart from the inevitable problems with VMware's VMplayer product but as always a klude was available on the forums which got me up and running.

Anyone else using it or has everyone already moved on to the beta of F27 :)

I've been using it since it came out on multiple systems, including my main home and work PCs. No issues at all; smooth sailing from day one. All systems were upgraded from F25 with dnf system-upgrade.

I haven't done a fresh install, but I can't imagine there would be much difference at this stage.

It's all working ok for me apart from Evolution hangs for a while quite regularly, seen one or two others report the same thing (which didn't happen on F25). This is my work PC so use Evolution a fair bit to talk to MS Exchange as you might imagine.

Apart from that I had to stick in softlink to an SSL lib to get viber to work but otherwise the PC is behaving grand.

My last machine broke and it was running Fedora 25. I loved it, but I'm having awful problems dual booting my machine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,053 ✭✭✭opus

And a year later I've moved onto testing Fedora 28, so far so good. Figure it's fine to install it on any new desktop PC's for people.

tbh most fedora releases are ready for "home" use shortly after GA.

Reminds me. I seriously need to invest in a PC and run Fedora or Mint, or dual boot both.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,053 ✭✭✭opus

Time goes by & I've just done my first kickstart install of Fedora 30 as aiming to have that one new PC's going to desks shortly. Skipped F29 as don't want to be changing every six months.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 19,242 Mod ✭✭✭✭L.Jenkins

Yeah it's been a while since this thread was started. I haven't used Fedora in ages as a dual boot OS. Windows 10 is a pain in the ass to try and install along side.

I might buy a new machine soon for the purpose.

last one i tried was 28 with xfce, was a really nice distro for once. the early 20s were a disaster stability wise

Think I started with 20 or 22. Haven't had a chance to try the latest release.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,053 ✭✭✭opus

Was reading that v30 is probably going to stick around for a year rather than v31 coming out in six months. Suits me fine as it will get updates for longer.

This a new schedule for future releases?

    Or just for F30?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,294 ✭✭✭limnam

Looks like 31 is still scheduled for October

This was the article I read a few weeks back but see it's been updated to say 31 isn't going to be delayed after all. Had to check to make sure I wasn't going insane :)

F30 has been flawless so far on my own PC so going to bite the bullet & put it onto a user's PC today.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 19,242 Mod ✭✭✭✭L.Jenkins

Bit the bullet and purged Windows 10 from my laptop in favour of Fedora 30. Had to go buy a patch cable. Having problems connecting to the wireless and have been searching for a solution as the adapter can't be found.

Anyone else have the same issue and a work around? I had this problem before and no issue resolving it, but since I now have a new machine and version of Fedora, I'm tearing the rest of my hair out trying to fix it.

    Which card/chipset is it?

AMD A9, Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8821CE 802.11ac PCIe Wireless Network Adapter.

Now that I have the wireless card info, I might be able to get a driver for it.

Will go over that soon, but I'm using USB tethering at the moment, so I have a temporary fix I'm happy to use for now.

Have just installed Fedora 30 off a DVD from a Linux Format Mag unto a Lenovo T540.

How's it running for you? I quite like it, but I'm previously mentioned my only grievance with it.

Too early to tell. Need to get all the updates installed, it only has the DVD installed stuff yet. few more days..let's say next week for my report here.

Did you attempt the potential fix above?

I tried it and everything in between.

My own review will be somewhat delayed. A ram chip installed by the repair shop (pm me if interested) is either bad or incorrectly inserted. This is causing machine to freeze at random intervals. Needs a visit to different repair shop I've two in mind to choose from)

Was a little lazy until now in resolving the missing wireless driver issue. Was a simple case of:
    • sudo dnf install dkms
    • git clone the repo and unzip it.
    • Ensure the directory is named "rtl8821ce"
    • cd ../rtl8821ce/
    • sudo ./dkms-install.sh

    Should do the trick.

See Fedora 31 is released, will see about setting up a test box at the start of Dec once the annual xmas hibernation starts at work.

    Upgrading at the moment :)

We use it at work so I'll need to make sure a raft of s/w products play nice with it. Not always guaranteed. Always wait a month in any case for the first raft of patches to appear.

Why Fedora over something like an ubuntu LTS?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,053 ✭✭✭opus

Place is a RedHat/Centos/Fedora set up. Some of the s/w tools don't support Ubuntu as a platform.

Not to disparage deb based systems, but I started out with Red Hat 16 years ago and while I did spent about 18 months using Linux Mint, I prefer Fedora.

On the subject of Fedora again, I upgraded to 31 to see and there's no issues yet. I'll be maintaining update religiously and created my own upgrade script, because I was too lazy to sit and wait.

Made the rookie mistake of attempting an upgrade to version 32. Needless to say, it didn't go well and I've since had to reinstall 31. I've learned that patience is a virtue, and I'll wait a few months before trying again.

Thought it wasn't released till tomorrow.

    You were very excited! :)

Yeah. For anything important I leave it at least for a few days

As far as I'm aware, it was released on the 21st of this month, but I could be wrong. Sure look, it's a learning experience and I keep backups on Google Drive just in case a situation I've mentioned arises.

No, It failed the Go/No go meeting due to blockers so was pushed out to the 28th. It was originally targeted for the 21st

I'll give it a couple of weeks before I try again. Give them time to chance up on any problems that might arise.

In the office today to do a few things so grabbed a PC that was lying around to see about doing a kickstart install of F32. Thankfully looks like not much has changed over F30 as just had to update my script to reference the new release & let it off.

Needless to say whole bunch of package conflicts was the result so that's a little bit of work to sort it out.

By adding --best and --allow-erasing when updating, that should remove conflicts.

Cheers but I'm not updating anything rather a clean install via kickstart. Happens almost every time as some packages vanish from release to release. All sorted in the end, now just left with two problems the VMware Player won't install & for some reason logging in is dog slow compared to F30. But sure if everything just worked, life would be boring :)

Is it the boot that's slow or after providing credentials?

    Is it https://ask.fedoraproject.org/t/boot-loading-time-is-very-high/6076 ?

Yeah but when you're running an update, the following usually provides the best update.

sudo dnf update -y --best --allow-erasing

Never watched the boot as I set it installing during my one day a week at work. It was alive the following day when I checked in on it. The slow part is when a non-root user ssh's onto the box, it takes ~45 secs from entering a password 'til you get a prompt. It's instant on F30 so something I'll have to dig in to, it's either NIS or NFS if I had to guess.
    L.Jenkins wrote: »

I'm not running any update. All the packages are specified in the kickstart file for the install either as a group or individual package names. This happens every release as some package(s) that were around last time are now gone.

Not like there's any rush with this as I'll need to install it on my own PC & use it for a month or two before I'd start installing it on PC's for general use. That could well be close to Christmas!

Do you update machines remotely? If so, how do you provide remote updates?
