ya if you're doing it online you need to use your card. So do you reckon i can book now and if i do the test say this weekend and it passed by nct cert would be valid until 16/01/19?

When you pick a date, it will tell you if it a voluntary test(1 year), or if it's anniversary, which will expire 16/1/19

This is a handy calculator for subtracting the 90 days.

    https://www.timeanddate.com/date/dateadd.html

It works the same if your cert is nearly a year out of date. If you book it 90 days before it is a year out of date. You'll get the year plus 90 days on the new cert.

As long as you do the test on or after tomorrow (Wed. Oct 18th), you will get a 12 months cert to January 2019.

90 days or less to the due date gets you the same cert as if you did it on the day it expires.

91 or more days remaining and it's a 'voluntary early test' so the cert you get will be dated from the date of the test. In the OP's case (2006 car), if he did the test today, he will get a 12 months cert expiring in Oct 2018.

Vehicle owners who wish to present their vehicle for inspection earlier than 90 days before their NCT due date will now be allowed to do so.

Where this happens the vehicle will receive a 2 year (or 1 year depending on the age of the vehicle) certificate duration from the date it passes the test.

To qualify for Voluntary Early Testing the vehicle must PASS the NCT prior to the 90 days before its test due date

Strange one. I booked with my credit card and when I presented for the test, I offered the guy at the counter my credit card but he said he didn't need it and he handed me the tally roll receipt whereas a woman in front of me produced a card and shoved it into the machine.

The money isn't taken from the credit card until you show up for the test so maybe it's possible to book with a credit card but then on the day ask if you can pay with a different card???

If you book over the phone you don't pre-pay. You can't pay with a different card on the day unless the payment fails.
