Looking pretty grim, check out VentuSky.

Reports of 42 foot waves off the south coast of Ireland, stay safe M8s.

    https://www.ventusky.com/?p=53.4;-10.3;5&l=gust&w=fast
Hurricane Ophelia is now transitioning into an extra-tropical cyclone as it loses its notable eyewall.
We have put together a graphic giving people a rough idea of what kind of wind to expect and when to expect it.
We recommend making any necessary preparations for the storm now. Also check in with eldery neighbours to see if they need any help. Contact your local council if you are in an area prone to storm surge and enquire about sandbags.
We advise against making journeys by road during peak storm conditions.

All the Schools and Colleges in Cork City and the County are closed.

Aer Lingus flights to and from Cork Airport are canceled.

Dont swim in the sea, dont make unnecessary journeys.

Cork City Tides: High Water is at 1600 (4pm) tomorrow. The wind is WSW so it could be much worse, however, it might be worth avoiding low lying areas for a few hrs either side of 1600.

I suspect town will be very quiet tomorrow - several businesses are closed already. It might be worth ringing your office/business before going in.....

With a bit of luck, we'll avoid the worst of this, but let's not take any un-necessary chances. Stay safe! :-)

No major signs of a heavy storm in Cork City, pretty calm at the minute.

    There isn't, it's calm out.

This report gives an idea of the times things are gonna heat up.

    Really picking up now. Gulp

Just back from town, pretty quiet there. It was a bit breezy but nothing special but looks to have gotten a *lot* stronger in the last few mins.

Got an unexpected day off as UCC has shut everything, heard from a few friends they've been told to work from home ('til the power goes!).

Very bad now in Douglas / turners cross area here. High tide is around 3 o'clock. Is there a possibility of flooding in inner city areas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,379 ✭✭✭✭namloc1980

Saw a picture on twitter. Severe damage to the stadium in Turner's Cross. Looked like roof lifted off from the Derrynane stand

It HAS brightened up a bit alright, and the wind does seem to have died down a little...patch of blue sky over Bishopstown now <shock>

    https://www.ventusky.com/?p=51.0;-5.9;5&l=wind

would suggest that we have a way to go though.

Think half the country has been glued to that site! Guess it will be late afternoon 'til we're clear.

Came across the pic of Turner's X earlier on, no match tomorrow anyway for sure.

The AA reporting trees down in many location - including Rochestown Rd, Sth Douglas Rd and Monkstown.

Does anyone have detailed info on the route Douglas to Passage West please? I need to travel later on. Is Rochestown Road passable or the high road via the monastery. Thanks.

There's a guy in the field in front of my house with a chainsaw - he drove into the estate, spotted the uprooted tree, parked his van and started sawing.
Seems a bit mad, considering it's still pretty windy.

Someone was killed doing that very same thing.

Got out for a bit of a walk when the sun came out for an hour earlier & there was some amount of broken slates on the ground outside the Tesco on Paul St, some building there must have been shedding them at a rate of knots. Hopefully nobody was nearby when they came down.

It's still pretty windy in the city. There was a lull for a bit- but it really has picked up again.
