If Dublin ends up having a red warning how likely is it for Dublin Bus to stop as the storm looks likely to be at it's worst for the evening commute?

I would strongly suggest keeping an eye on the Dublin Bus website and twitter feed.

Real danger here of the morning Dublin commute going smoothly and the evening commute being an utter disaster. The various transport operators ought to be a tad more proactive, even if it's just outlining the conditions under which they'll suspend operations. Right now, Irish Rail for example seem to just be reacting to whatever happens, hoping a tree doesn't fall on a DART line somewhere.

    Update from Irish Rail

The Following Services will not run:
    - Limerick Junction to Waterford
    - Limerick to Ballybrophy via Nenagh

A speed restriction of 80kph (50mph) will be in place on the following routes:
    - Tralee to Mallow
    - Cork to Charleville
    - Cork to Cobh/Midleton
    - Waterford to Kilkenny
    - Rosslare Europort to Gorey

Delays of 15 to 30 minutes are expected to services operating on the following routes:
    - Cork to Dublin
    - Tralee to Cork/Dublin
    - Waterford to Dublin
    - Rosslare Europort to Dublin

i guess the modelling was not definitive for most of the rest of the country before now. i read somewhere they're more in the period now of 'nowcasting' rather than 'forecasting'.

Can a Luas operate in high winds? Dreading getting home more than anything

i don't think they've tested the luas in dublin in some of the winds expected...

That's all that they can do, best to keep moving unless it's unsafe to do so.

  • So... what are the chances of the DARTs all being cancelled by tomorrow evening? I'm afraid I'll get into the office but will have no way of getting home.

i would guess that hey have a good idea of what sort of effect a crosswind would have on the luas - i suppose it'd be most exposed on the green line out south of sandyford.

TBH dispute a red warning, I don't think it be as bad in Dublin as predicted in terms of winds. Bound to weaken as it comes overland.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Arts Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 50,887 CMod ✭✭✭✭magicbastarder

the winds will be coastal though, from what i can see:
Violent and destructive gusts are forecast with all areas at risk and in particular the southwest and south in the morning, and eastern counties in the afternoon.

    The winds aren't coming overland.

Be prepared for dart to fail as very likely power lines will go down also trees and other debry may hamper services.

Db will be out in service no matter what.

Trains will run unless trees are down or severe floods.

Bus eireann will still run most services but school runs are all off.

It will be an interesting day seeing bins etc flying all around.

Charge phones tonight and be prepared for power outages.

I'm staying home, I think it's very likely the Dart will have problems in the afternoon and don't fancy being stranded in town.

It's a strong possibility on the southsjde ,, possible damage to overhead wires and flooding or you might get away. With a bit of signal failure. It has a habit of happening at peak times. I wouldn't be surprised of a delay somewhere on the maynooth /sligo line due to a tree on the line and the Rosslare only going as far as Gorey.
Cork station's new roof might end up in the car park.

Always look on the bright side of life. As a bonus the storm seems to be tearing a path through Dromod County Leitrim. :D

Db will be out in service no matter what.

Do you think buses 4.4 metre tall are safe driving around in winds of around 100km/h?

Forecast for Dublin shows gusts of winds of:
    • 70km/h+ after 10am
    • 89km/h after 1pm
    • 85km/h around 2pm and 4pm
    • 98km/h at around 5pm
    • 93km/h around 4pm and 9pm
    • etc

And it's worth noting that Ophelia strengthened on Saturday when it was expected to weaken at that point.

Irish Rail have sent out an emergency working timetable amendment. All services between Waterford and Limerick Junction and Ballybrophy and Limerick are cancelled entirely tomorrow.

The following services will have a temporary maximum speed limit of 50MPH imposed for Monday 16th October.
    • Midleton/Cobh to Cork,
    • Cork to Charleville,
    • Mallow to Tralee,
    • Kilkenny to Waterford,
    • Rosslare Europort to Gorey.

Delays are inevitable on all services operating on these sections. I appreciate that this was posted on the top post but it is worth repeating in it's own post.

All Bus Eireann services nationwide suspended until 2pm at least, when they'll review the situation.

Any word on Dublin Bus? Anyone here on the inside? They finally sent a tweet but it was more of a 'we don't know what to do so just letting you know we're here'.

  • Moderators, Motoring & Transport Moderators Posts: 11,744 Mod ✭✭✭✭devnull

Latest on Dublin Bus is as the first post:
Due to the RED weather alert issued by Met Éireann for the Greater Dublin Area this evening, Dublin Bus is considering the implications of this for our services tomorrow, Monday 16 October, and is taking advice from Met Éireann and the National Emergency Coordination Committee.

I would expect an announcement shortly based on that.

This is ridiculous, yes by all means suspend S/W services until 2pm but is there really a justification to not operate a lot of other services in the morning when there will be no impact.

Makes sense, given the major impact on Dublin will be in the afternoon time. BÉ should really have run pre-9am Dublin commuter services too. In any case it will be business as usual for me tomorrow!

    Latest Update from DB
Morning peak services are expected to operate as normal. There will be significant disruption to services from 09.00 to 18.00. This may include no
services being available during this time.

We hope to return services to normal after 18.00. However, customers should be aware that services may experience delays and disruptions to service as service levels will be dependent on weather conditions.

They said 'all services' so I would assume that means everything they operate.

Of all days of the year, tomorrow is the day I have to be in Dublin. Sigh!! Matthews Coaches says they are operating tomorrow, and a lot of concerned folks trying tp change that on their Facebook page.

I might end up having to drive tomorrow; on the plus side roads should be quiet.

As already posted, this is the wind gust strength for Dublin tomorrow:
    • 70km/h+ after 10am
    • 89km/h after 1pm
    • 85km/h around 2pm and 4pm
    • 98km/h at around 5pm
    • 93km/h around 4pm and 9pm
    • etc

Are people going to wait in work until after 9pm? Because -- according to the current forecast -- it only gets worse from 10am onwards and only starts to die down after 9pm.

    and before 10am......

There is no excuse not to operate services like DB are.

NTA need to cut them for every service they fail to run up to 10.00 or whenever it becomes "un safe" to run services.

Can you link me to where those numbers come from?

I'm considering going down from Belfast to work but if winds are going to be like that there is a good chance DB will cancel and I will be stranded in office after work.

That's up to folks for themselves to decide when to leave work. I'll probably wait til after 7 personally. DB should be recommencing services post 6pm. It also disregards those who will be making single journeys that morning into Dublin and not needing an evening return - i.e. those who stay in Dub Mon-Fri, or on the way to the airport for morning flights that will be able to leave.

Don't train drivers stay in doors all the time!

IE staff got a memo which detailed the temp speed restrictions similar to what was copied to the website.

Well if they have a covered passageway from their front door to the depot i guess they do stay indoors. Just because you want to ignore critical safety advise been issued over travel doesn't mean you should expect other to ignore it in order to transport you from A to B.
