So ... heading down the motorway 120kmph on cruise control (quiet enough road) ....notice this numpty in the rear view up my posterior.

anyways I -very gradually- slow down and speed up a bit and he follows suit.. did a few overtakes and he's stuck to me like a limpit.
He had low enough car (old hyundai I think) and I had people carrier.
So figured out he was capitalising on my aerodynamics.

For a finish I indicated and pulled over into lay by to let him Pass.

Picked up again and sure enough he was up the ar5e of a van... left em for dead.

In fairness it wasn't costing me anything but it just annoyed the heck outta me.

Does any of ye skinflints partake in this?
Or has it ever happened to ye and how did you deal with it.
I remember there was a thread on it hear years ago.... serious business.

Nah, some people just can’t drive. No thought went into it.

In the same way that some people will park beside your car in a completely empty car park because they need your car to co-ordinate against I find that some motorway drivers simply can't comprehend the open road with nothing in front and need another car to pace themselves against.

Sometimes when I encounter a knob like this, I’ll increase by 10-15 km/h in the hope of losing them, and then go back down to 120 when I’m far enough away from them!

Did have a trailer all the way from Limerick to the Naas road a few months back, annoying ta fcuk

If I'm not in a hurry I'll hang a safe distance behind an Articulated Lorrry with a proper mudguard on the back because they travel constant speeds and it is relaxing.
I'd never even consider slipstreaming a car as they aren't driven by professional drivers.
The last time I was conciously aware of being slipstreamed was by a Model S who obviously had a long way to go and was looking for a car traveling at a reasonable speed that suited him.

If someone drives close enough to you to derive a benefit from it, then they are dangerous. Nothing more annoying than tailgaters.

Ya I definitely think he was using the slipstream anyways.
But then I was wondering about the speed vs. Fuel consumption trade off. What's the optimal speed for this?

They can be professional as they like, they still can't see you.

I drive a 11 foot box body van at work and there is nothing more annoying than somebody so close you can barely see their wingmirrors.

I wouldn't need to be that close to be getting benefit from being behind them.

the only video I was able to find was a 240p here you can see the full table http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lttgT1XZVvE&feature=player_detailpage#t=534s

you can see that the economy starts at 100 feet with 11% saving over the control than as you get closer the economy increases up to 40% at 10 feet

You encounter idiots on the road everyday. Some of them don't know any better as they genuinely don't see anything wrong with what they are doing, while others act the maggot and want a reaction from you. I find totally ignoring such idiots is the best result as they get fed up and move on to the next car.

I'll let the cruise control do most of the work on empty enough roads, even when there's a fair bit of traffic lights and starting and stopping. I wouldn't draft behind anyone though. Unlike a lot of people I don't overtake at the first sign of a truck on the motorway. I don't mind going 5kph under at the benefit of less wind resistance, keeping a safe distance obviously.

I did draft a truck once though, but that was while doing 68kph on the push bike :D

If you are close enough to slip stream you are too close. You might be getting sucked along by professional drivers but by doing it you are showing your amateurism.

I don't think that's true you can be the suggested 2 seconds back (I prefer min 4secs) and still get a benefit from disrupted air. Didnt the myth busters cover it?

Some people just have no clue when driving. They aren't hypermiling they are just unaware of the sensible gap to leave.

I said I'm happy to hang behind an articulated lorry. I never said I slipstream on their crash bar and if I did I'd be pulled by the Polizei in double quick time.
Climb down off your high horse because you are nowhere near where I am driving to determine if I'm driving safely or not especially while sitting at your keyboard.
I certainly said nothing in my contributions to this thread which would give you any grounds to label my driving as amateurish but that doesn't stop you jumping to conclusions because you feel the need to browbeat All the Bad drivers out there to be the worlds best driver just like you.

if you are a safe distance back, you are merely pacing the truck and that's not what this thread is about.

My instant fuel consumption monitor on the dashboard says differently.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,795 ✭✭✭Isambard

it says you are not a safe distance back? confused

I imagine the fuel consumption is showing a higher MPG due to the lack of wind. I was getting low 40MPG on the live consumption in strong winds doing 120kph the other day and any sort of motorway cruising shows 60-80...

That would drive me spare, the boot would get put down until that gobshiite was but a tiny speck in my mirror, and then it's back to cruising speed.

It happens fairly often. I doubt it's for fuel saving. It's just due to stupidity.

I'm driving at 100km/h on motorway (vehicle with speed limiter if someone asks why so slow), cars approach from behind getting close fairly quickly (so must be doing 120km/h or more), and then keep behind me without overtaking.

When driving my car, it once happened that big red van tailgated me on N4 from Dublin.
I was doing 120km/h and he's few metres behind me. I accelerate to 130km/h and he's still few metres behind me. I accelerate to 150km/h and still the same. I was surprised he was able to go that quick, as I think it was some old transit.
I had to accelerate to over 200km/h to loose him.

Not until there's a proper taxi test, otherwise they're just average drivers who make a living from their car, there's a difference between that and someone who's skill makes them a professional at somethong.

Isn't tailgating a penalty point offence?

I think we could start a new thread on that subject.

Honestly I've had a few where I thought "this guy has no control over the car and just can't anticipate anything happening around him."

Inevitably ask, Been driving taxis long?
    All me life buddd..
