First car for own policy

I'm 22 and currently looking to get a car on my own policy, and am open to suggestions. I've had my license for two and a half years, and have been a named driver on my parents insurance for the same amount of time. I've been looking at small engined models from the late 90s/early 2000s like a Corsa, Colt, Golf, Corolla etc, but like I said I'm very open to any other ideas. Was hoping to spend less than €1200 but could stretch that a little bit for something decent.

These days, if you want it to be somewhat insurable, it not only needs to be small and small engined, it also needs to be as new as possible (lees than 10 years is ideal)... given your budget, You might be able to get a box with wheels like this or this. Probably not the things you actually want to drive but the Ka is actually pretty fun and should be pretty reliable. The 207 is not a driver's car by all means, and the 1.6 might make it "powerful" in the eyes of insurance, but it's also relatively safe so it's worth getting a quote for.

Whatever you go for, do not forget to name both your parents on your policy as it may very well keep the price down. Also, go for an insurance company that will accept named driver experience.

There is a dedicated insurance forum here, this forum is for "what car to buy?"

Ring a couple brokers to get initial ideas of cost.

Thanks for the reply, the Ka isn't the best looking thing in the world but there's one or two for sale near enough to me, I'll look into it!

I'm asking for recommendations re buying a cheap first car so I assumed it should be here? I'm already well aware I'll be spending much more on insurance than on the car itself.

KA is 1.3 though so mightn’t be that cheap to insure. They’re also rust buckets as they get older.

You’d probably get a kia Picanto, Toyota Aygo, Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107 in budget.

It's not that you will be spending more on insurance than on the car, it's more likely that it will be completely uninsurable. Not all companies take young drivers and very few take older cars so getting one that will do both is next to impossible.

If you find a car that you like, call around to get a quote before you even go look at it. Remember to get a quote with a reg, don't just call asking for a quote for a generic make and model as it won't be valid and if you end up getting the car, it may end up costing a completely different amount
