I'm selling my car and the above dealer wants to buy it. He wants to buy it on Saturday with business cheque. It's for €18,000 so I'm a bit worried I might be scammed. As it's the weekend I can't go to the bank to make sure the cheque is ok. I'd appreciate any advice. I hope it's ok to mention the garage name.

What make/model is it? There has to be more to this story. How did it come about that the garage wanted to buy the car?

Hi John boy, it's a Toyota auris. I just advertised it on car buyers guide and he phoned up. He hasn't seen the car yet. We live in Meath and he has business here on Saturday and wants to buy it providing he's happy with it.

I have no knowledge of this car dealership and this is general advice that you are free to ignore.
Do not accept a business cheque. Bank transfer or cash at a bank is the way to go.

If its o keeffes garage in Gneeveguilla i would have no fears. Its one of the most reputable places you are ever likely to deal with. Let me guess. Probably a corolla or an avensis?

Tell him he can collect it then when the cheque clears. Or alternatively do an electronic money transfer between your banks.

Thank you very much. I agree with you but there are no banks open on Saturday.

Phone the garage and make sure that it's not someone using their name.

Hi I'm from Gneeveguilla and that car dealer is extremely reliable. You will have no problems with them.

If you have any fears, ring the office tomorrow. The guy in the office is called Moss and the owner of the place is Timmy. 064 7758138. If it was them that actually contacted you it'll put your mind at ease.

Sometimes people could contact you claiming to be from a small dealer thinking you wouldn't check it out. Can never be too careful.

    Hope it works out

Family dealing with them for years. They deal mainly in toyotas. We all bought from them at one stage or another and there are currently 3 o keeffes garage cars in the yard between sisters and parents.Garage is about 3k from me. Probably Timmy you were dealing with. People travel from all over the county to deal with them. Just my opinion. Good luck with your sale.

Thank you very much, I feel a lot happier now. It was Timmy who phoned. He's called a few times now and that's the number he used. I checked that out straight away.

No bother..I'm the same as sann above, my father sister and brother all driving cars from the garage and I'd know timmy fairly well myself.

You're right to check it out though. Happy to help

Getting a cheque even on a day the banks are open won't give you any guarantees - the cheque is only good when/if it clears which takes several days. Nobody in a bank branch can tell you if a cheque is good or bad so you are no better or worse off getting the cheque handed to you on a Saturday or any other day of the week.

I met a dealer guy in a similar situation, he was coming up from Cork and met me on the street (in Dublin) where I worked. I did the research on him, he seemed genuine i.e. did have a dealership where he claimed to be operating from but in advance I told him that I would need id (driving licence) and that I would take his photograph. He had no problem with that arrangement and the deal went through without a hitch.

I've dealt with them for servicing a few years back and they are a small family run outfit in business forever. Extremely good name from anybody I know who has dealt with them.

They specialise in used Toyota's and I'd have no fear taking a cheque off them and lodging it on the Monday

Thank you so much for your reply. Everyone has been so helpful I can't tell you how grateful I am.

By all means take the cheque if you must, but don't even dream of handing the car over until it has cleared and the funds are in your account.

I would ring them at their advertised number, and speak to the manager / owner, and confirm that it is they who are buying your car. If you are happy with that, and you are happy they are a genuine dealership then some element of trust should prevail. If you are really worried do a credit check on them. https://www.solocheck.ie

Ditto to all above.Something similar happened to me with a garage in north cork who had an auris i was interested in-me based in dundalk.Made phone contact, checked out well and they were interested in my corolla.Owner was in dublin on a saturday and drove up car ,met me drove my own and dealt without a hitch, actually very similar to your contact as had almost 100per cent used toyotas.

Electronic bank transfer is so easy these days, bizarre that the cheque persists.

Just wanted to update. We sold the car to O Keeffe's Garage at the weekend and everything went smoothly. Timmy couldn't have been easier to deal with, a very decent man. Thank you all so much for your help.

good to hear theres some decent used garages around - think ones in rural areas with workshops are usually decent.

Sorry but only saw this thread this morn, happy it worked out for you. Dobman88 is right, very reliable, I should know. They do that sort of thing from time to time, search up the Country for cars, normally Toyotas, no bother to them, all our family have Toyotas, I'd say all sourced from Leinster
