Looking to get Sky in Apt

    Hi Guys
I'm living in an apt & I used to have virgin, I would love to get freesat/free to air sat channels/ ariel for the bog channels but currently there is no run into the apt for sat, only cable for virgin.
In order to get around this I'm thinking of getting Sky for a year, they will run the sat cables down into the apt from the communal dish on the roof of the apt building.

Looking at the current bundles from Sky I see you can only get it with the Sky Q boxes. I was reading Sky use a different setup for Q then what was used previously & this would affect me when I go to cancel Sky after the year & get a freesat/ free to air box... (something to do with a different LNB on the dish), I suspect not all of my neighbours are using sky Q though & I would presume some are still rocking the old sky hd etc boxes...

Am I right or am I talking out of my ass? If I am right is there any easy way of getting around this issue? I should note we are not allowed to run cabling ourselves etc so that option is out & I don't fancy renting a cherry picker to run cable myself :)

Some apartment complexes are not setup for Q yet. So you might be in luck. Ask the Reps on their talk to forum and they can check the apartment for you.

Depends how the apartment block is cabled, is it directly from the dish or via a multiswitch feeding all apartments?

Sky normally in apartments is from a multiswitch fed from a 4 output Quattro LNB on the dish, converting the block for Sky Q simply means swapping out the multiswitch for a SkyQ compatible dSCR multiswitch which works with SkyQ and all other legacy receivers. SkyQ in this instance only requires a single cable for multiple tuners in the box.

The only problem down the road for Freesat, depending on how many cables they run to your apartment, Freesat currently requires 2 cables for watching and recording and there is no Irish channels available this way.

Freesat have a new generation receiver in development that we believe may be compatible with SkyQ equipment in maybe 12 months time but still no Irish channel via this method.

Thanks Cush, not sure how it's setup & the management agent hasn't a clue either so I might just have to chance my arm & get sky Q for the year & then see how I'm fixed!
